BASIC FUNCTION:
The Perioperative Coordinator /Educator for the Perioperative Clinic (PC), Same Day Surgery, Operating Room, PACU, and Endoscopy is a Registered Nurse with clinical and theoretical expertise in the nursing care of the surgical patient. Responsibilities include assisting the Director with colleague supervision/staffing, colleague hiring, evaluations, disciplinary actions, and daily patient flow. In the educator role, responsibilities include colleague orientation, education, and continual competency assurance for all Surgical Services Departments. Responsibilities also include maintaining complete and accurate records, maintenance of supplies/equipment and assisting with the provision of day-to-day management of assigned Perioperative Departments.
JOB DUTIES:
Colleague Orientation:
- Creates, plans, implements and updates new employee orientation schedules and programs.
- Coordinates orientation programs in conjunction with Educational Services.
- Evaluates progress of new employees through weekly goal-setting meetings and feedback from preceptor/s.
- Orients colleagues regarding proper use and cleaning of equipment at point of care.
- Develops and revises orientation and competency forms to maintain an up-to-date status
- Provides input into colleague status at the end of the probationary period.
- Maintains accurate logs and files for all educational endeavors, including inservice programs, competency programs, and orientation.
- Monitors and ensures compliance to radiation safety for Physicians, Operating Room and Endoscopy staff.
Colleague Education/Competency:
- Assesses the learning needs for all department colleagues through direct observation and questioning.
- Provides mandatory and yearly competency programs, ensuring accurate and complete documentation on the
yearly Aultman-Alliance Community Hospital Education Card.
- Ensures cross-training within Surgical Services as directed.
Colleague Inservices:
- Provides inservices and ongoing education for all new equipment prior to its implementation, ensuring that
important aspects of the equipment’s operator manual are included in each inservice.
- Provides inservices and ongoing education for all new procedures.
- Provides for the availability of required inservices and ensures that educational requirements are met for each
employee involved in the new procedure or equipment.
Ensures that mandatory inservices are held for 100% of Surgical Services colleagues.
- Ensures complete and accurate documentation of all inservice initiatives.
- Participates in the coordination of scheduling for mandatory employee health and educational activities.
Colleague Discipline/Evaluations:
- Assists the Director with the preparation and administration of colleague evaluations.
- Intervenes when employee performance deviates from acceptable standards and initiates appropriate follow-up to include employee counseling and disciplinary actions.
Committees:
- Serves on Surgical Services Business/Operational and Operating Room Committees.
- Serves on Peer Review and Service Excellence Committees.
- Serves on Surgical Value Analysis Team.
- Serves on Infection Prevention and SSI Infection Committees
- Serves on HDS Perioperative Team.
- Participates in ad hoc and committee assignments, when indicated.
Daily Operation:
- Oversees all work areas and handles routines operational problems.
- Ensures adequate storage, cleanliness, control, and accessibility of supplies and equipment.
- Assigns special projects as needed.
Delegation:
- Ensures that all work that is delegated is appropriate to the level of expertise; acts as a resource person for all personnel.
Department Goals:
- Participates in the development and accomplishment of departmental goals.
Financial:
- Monitors and controls the budget through:
a. Appropriate staffing of each department within established budgetary and volume guidelines (e.g.
schedule, monitor overtime, utilization of approved time off and benefit time) given consideration to
patient safety and satisfaction.
b. Recommends ordering of supplies/instruments that are needed/requested that are not in current
inventory.
c. Assists with budget preparation as requested by Director.
d. Assists with identification of new products to be evaluated to ensure quality, standardization, and
cost containment.
e. Communicates need for supplies needed to maintain workflow to Surgical
Services Materials Management Specialist.
Hiring/Staffing:
- Assists the Director to perform the interview and selection process for new colleagues.
- Ensures appropriate/timely staff schedules and daily assignments for PC, Surgery, SDS, PACU and Endoscopy employees and appropriately informs colleagues of changes to posted schedule.
Patient Care/Communication:
- Maintains knowledge of the status of all patients to ensure the delivery of optimum care.
- Directs and communicates effectively and appropriately with staff, Director, Management Team, and Physicians.
- Works as a team player in all departmental initiatives.
- Assists Director to ensure compliance to customer satisfaction initiatives-colleague and patient satisfaction.
Policy Development/Revision:
- Develops and revises policies related PC, SDS, O.R., PACU, and Endoscopy Departments.
- Communicates policy revisions to staff and other departments, as appropriate.
- Assists Director with maintenance of policy and procedure manuals as directed by hospital policy.
- Assists Director to ensure compliance to departmental policies.
- Assists with ensuring compliance with all applicable regulatory, accreditation requirements and ACHC standards for all assigned departments-maintains regulatory readiness.
Quality Improvement/Safety
- Assists Director with Quality Improvement initiatives.
- Maintains appropriate departmental quality improvement projects and maintains PDCA documentation.
- Demonstrates accepted procedures for handling of OR linen, equipment and instrumentation.
- Ensures proper standards of infection prevention are understood and maintained, taking corrective action to remedy problems.
- Ensures appropriate use of laser in the operative setting through staff observation and education.
Staff Meetings:
- Plans, chairs, and prepares minutes for departmental staff meetings (OR, SDS/PACU/PC/and ‘Endoscopy).
Students:
- Plans, coordinates/evaluates learning activities/orientation for incoming students from affiliated facilities, universities, programs, including assignment to appropriate preceptors.
- Ensures complete and accurate documentation of all student learning/orientation initiatives.
- Coordinates student assignments to area of study.
Shared Governance:
- Plans, and coordinates Surgical Services (PC, SDS, OR, Endoscopy, PACU, Anesthesia) Nursing Council meetings on a monthly basis.
- Ensures adequate staffing to allow for colleague representation at Nursing Council.
- Ensures ongoing projects with documentation of each.
Other duties:
- Assists Director with yearly revision of SDS sheets and capital inventory lists.
- Ensures that departmental cleaning is performed and accurate logs kept and filed.
- Assists Director to ensure compliance to the Reptrax system for company representatives.
- Physically present in the clinical area on a regular basis, guiding and teaching appropriate nursing
Care.
- Performs Charge Nurse, Scrub, Circulating, or Assistant role when staffing needs mandate.
- Responsible for checking emails and online learning assignments (Relias) on a regular basis.
- Other duties as assigned by Director of Surgical Services within legal limits

AGE APPROPRIATE CARE:

MACHINES, TOOLS, EQUIPMENT USED:
Must be knowledgeable of all instruments, supplies used in the Surgical Services Department,
office supplies, computers, printers, telephone, fax machine, and copy machine.\
EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:
- Currently licensed as a Registered Nurse to practice in the state of Ohio.
- Bachelor Degree-Nursing or related field required or must enroll after hire.
- Maintains current BLS certification through the American Heart Association
- Achieves and maintains Laser Safety Officer Certification within one year of hire.
- Membership in American Operating Room Nurses Association (AORN) is required
- AORN Certification in OR Nursing (CNOR) required within 2 years of hire and must be maintained.
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with members of the health care team.
- Five years of clinical experience in Surgical Services is required.
- Demonstrated leadership ability and strong communication skills.
- Previous experience in perioperative teaching is preferred.
- Supervisory experience in a head nurse or similar position of responsibility and supervision is preferred.
- Must be able to work effectively as a team player with physicians, management/nursing staff and other departments.
- Must be computer-literate to complete task(s), as required.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Able to stand/walk for up to 7.75 hours per shift.
- Able to bend to reach items of floor, bedside level and stretch to reach overhead.
- Able to lift 25 lbs intermittently, unassisted.
- Able to move and ambulate patients, using good body mechanics, unassisted.
- Ability to see clearly and hear normal speaking voices.
- Able to communicate verbally, interpersonally and over the telephone in a clear speech.
- Dexterity necessary to write legibly.
