What are the responsibilities and job description for the Teaching Artist position at Austin Bat Cave?
Austin Bat Cave (ABC) is a creative community. Our writing programs empower students to find their voices and tell their stories.
ABC is seeking paid Teaching Artists to teach our after-school weekly writing clubs in Austin ISD and Del Valle ISD. Teaching Artists will lead weekly writing workshops in poetry, storytelling, personal narrative writing, persuasive writing, or fiction at an elementary school campus. Curriculum for these workshops are designed to engage students in meaningful, project-based writing activities that teach core ELA skills in a fun, whimsical, and supportive atmosphere.
The ideal candidate will:
- Care deeply about fostering a love for writing, storytelling and helping students to find and grow their creative voices.
- Believe that all students have stories to tell and devote themselves to providing a safe and respectful space for students to share their unique cultural and artistic identities in their writing.
- Be passionate about creativity and artistic expression and knowledgeable about sharing with students what an artist and writer can look like in their community.
- Be committed to equity in their programs so that students feel respected and represented
- Flexible and open to learning new forms of teaching writing.
- Prioritize building relationships with students, campus staff, and parents to create a culture of care and trust in ABC’s programs.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Teach one to two after-school writing workshops per week at assigned elementary school campus (frequency of workshops will depend on campus)
- Coordinate with the Program Director to review curriculum for workshops and complete required paid orientation, monthly observations, and additional ABC pedagogical trainings.
- Organize and transport workshop materials to school campus (materials provided by Program Director).
- Maintain consistent and timely communication with the Program Director and other program staff for your campus.
- Share materials and curriculum with the volunteer assistant supporting your workshop.
- Collect student work for the Austin Bat Cave annual anthology and maintain records of publishing release forms and media release forms.
- Work with students and campus partners to prepare a presentation for end-of semester showcase & student reading.
- Collect data using ABC survey tools throughout the semester.
- Maintain compliance with fingerprinting and background checks
- Follow all required campus safety procedures as well as maintain any required paperwork on site.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- A minimum of one year of experience teaching writing to youth and/or children.
- A minimum of one year of classroom management experience and confidence managing a class of up to 20 students.
- A minimum of one year of experience designing writing curriculums that are fun, engaging and interactive.
- Must have a reasonably flexible schedule and ability to attend after-school workshops on a weekly basis.
- Experience collaborating with a team to provide engaging lessons.
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills with a variety of audiences.
- Excellent organizational skills and a strong attention to detail.
- Self-direction and an ability to multitask.
- Knowledge of and passion for ABC’s mission and programs
- Pass a background check.
- A strong work ethic, a collaborative spirit, and a positive attitude!
WHAT WE OFFER
- Reports To: Austin Bat Cave Program Director
- Schedule: Regular duties occur from 3pm–5:30pm on 1-2 weekdays per week depending on campus placement and number of programs taught.
- Hourly Wage: $25 per hour
