What are the responsibilities and job description for the Austin Zoo Educator position at Austin Zoo?
Austin Zoo is currently seeking full-time and part-time Zoo Educators. Educators are responsible for leading field trip programs, outreach programs, scout workshops, and homeschool programs.
This role also involves facilitating Capybara and Galapagos tortoise encounters with the public.
Additionally, the educator will engage guests on zoo grounds through exhibit interpretation, biofacts, and animal encounters.
This position involves handling a variety of small animals.
Job Summary
Required Experience and Education:
Completion or pursuit of a Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Zoology, Environmental Science, Education, or related field from an accredited college or university.
Previous youth program experience required.
Responsibilities
- Enthusiastically engage visitors in inquiry-based learning activities.
- Engage zoo guests in strategically framed discussions regarding conservation and animal welfare.
- Demonstrate and encourage respect for animals during education programs.
- Assist with program development.
- Other duties as assigned.
Skills
- Demonstrate a strong interest and/or experience in environmental education.
- Enjoy working with children of all ages and abilities.
- Ability to adapt and make quick, responsible decisions and improvise when needed..
- Display a high level of patience and respond well under pressure.
- Comfortable speaking in front of large groups of people.
- Enthusiastic, creative, adaptable, patient, and able to work both independently and with a team.
Additional Requirements:
- At least 18 years old
- Ability to work outdoors under various weather conditions
- Successful completion of a background check
