Job Description
We offer a merit-based work-from-home program based on job responsibilities. After initial training in-person, this specific role could have the flexibility to work from home up to 3 days per week.
Please note that we are not currently hiring fully remote positions. All candidates must have the ability to work in one of our tech offices from time to time. Our tech offices for this role are in Lansing, Michigan.
Auto-Owners Insurance, a top-rated insurance carrier, is seeking a motivated individual to join our IT Division as an experienced COBOL Trainer. Responsibilities include building, maintaining, and facilitating the training programs used by our IT Division. The position requires the person to:
- Have at least five (5) years of COBOL coding experience
- Understand defining, developing, testing, analyzing, and maintaining software programs and applications
- Administer our formal training programs for the IT division, including reviewing and evaluating trainee code and applying Auto-Owners’ best practices for coding
- Demonstrate strong verbal and written communication skills in a variety of contexts
- Provide support for the other training departments across the Company including the administration our Company Learning Management System (LMS)
- Work with subject matter experts within the Company to develop new training modules using eLearning development tools such as Lectora, Vyond, and Camtasia
- Coordinate events that provide additional learning opportunities for associates
Desired Skills and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Information Technology, Math, Actuarial Science, Economics, Statistics, or another logic-based field, or equivalent experience is preferred. A candidate with directly related experience, but no degree, may also be considered.
- Knowledge of COBOL, DB2, TSO, databases, and/or SQL is required
- Exposure to any of the following programming languages: R, SAS, Python, MATLAB, C, C , Java, JCL
- Enthusiasm for teaching others, especially about coding best practices and production-ready code
- Understanding of effective strategies to facilitate learning
- Must be able to learn and effectively use tools and software development techniques as practiced, acquired, or adopted within the IT Division
