Rail Loader
Summary of Position:
- To prepare railcars for loading and/or unloading, driving vehicles onto or off of proper railcars, securing vehicles to railcars according to manufacturer and American Association of Railroad standards, and preparing railcars for transportation.
Essential Functions, Duties & Tasks:
- Follow all safety guidelines to ensure job is done in a safe manner as well as attend safety meetings.
- Adhere to all AWC, Customer, and AAR safety standards.
- Install or remove vehicle securement devices.
- Drive vehicles onto or off of rail cars.
- Inspect vehicles for damage.
- Keep Leads, Managers and others informed of significant issues.
- Log processed work into computer program or tracking system as required .
- Meet or exceed established production and quality standards.
- Open or close rail car doors.
- Raise and lower rail car decks.
- Report damage to lead, supervisor, or manager.
- Secure customer vehicles to rail cars by using chains or chocks as required.
- Set bridge plates & Buck Ramp/operate loading ramps.
- Store chocks or chains.
- Verify VINs using work orders and technological equipment.
- Visually verifies that vehicle is damage free.
- Will utilize updated technological equipment as it becomes available.
- Work as part of a team.
- Able to react to change productively and handle other essential tasks as assigned .
- Daily clean up.
- Keep tools maintained and secure.
- May use track mobile or com-a-long.
- Notify supervisor of any workplace hazards or unsafe conditions.
- Participate in facility safety efforts by attending monthly safety meetings, report accidents and injuries on appropriate forms, and communicates the procedure to all appropriate customers/vendors and AWC personnel.
- Read, understand, and utilize VIN numbers, repair orders, purchase orders, and other documents to complete work.
- Understand AWC policies.
- Upkeep and maintenance of work area.
- Other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:
- Ability to adhere to strict quality and production standards without variance.
- Ability to climb ladders and work at a height approximately 15 feet above the ground.
- Ability to communicate diplomatically.
- Ability to function effectively under pressure.
- Ability to interact with others effectively; work as a team; good interpersonal skills.
- Ability to judge distances.
- Ability to keep confidential any work documents seen or conversations heard during performance of job duties.
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds over head.
- Ability to pass Safe Driving, Rail and Buck Ramp quiz with 80%or better.
- Ability to push, pull, or carry up to 85 pounds.
- Ability to read and understand SDS.
- Ability to stand, walk, and work outdoors in all weather conditions.
- Ability to write, read, and comprehend basic English.
- Able to drive both standard and automatic automobiles.
Education, Experience & Minimum Requirements:
- Follow directions, both written and verbal.
- Good visual ability and auditory ability.
- Knowledge of the use of hand tools (i.e., wrenches, screw drivers, ratchets, etc.).
- Must have a good sense of balance.
- Positively represent AWC.
- Understand Company and Customer requirements.
- Valid driver's license.
