On the Community Building Team, Avalon staff work together to build and support Avalon's tenant community and create a safe and healthy living environment. They encourage tenant leadership and participation in the organization and help tenants develop peer support networks.
The Community and Youth Coordinator (CYC) manages community programming at Avalon Community Center (s) located at a number of Avalon properties. They provide support, activities and resources to Avalon families. They also collaborate with community partners and stakeholders to advance Avalon's mission. The CYC works with various partners to offer trauma-informed, age-appropriate programs to Avalon youth and teens. The CYC is also a caring, supportive adult that youths can turn to outside of their immediate family should the need arise. Community and Youth Coordinators also collaborate with other Avalon staff to assess youth and family needs and to plan community center programming and engagement.

Core Responsibilities Include:
- Engage tenants and their families through creative, resourceful strategies that build trust and confidence
- Coordinate, initiate, and assist in facilitation and promotion of on-site activities, mutual aid support groups, outings, and community meetings/events/meals
- Manage relationships with non-Avalon community stakeholders while upholding Avalon's mission and values
- Identify new partnerships and collaborate with current youth program partners, including Ann Arbor Public Schools, CLR Academy, Youth Arts Alliance, Ann Arbor Parks and Recreation, and U of M/EMU Schools of Social Work
- Manage and support the food pantry
- Ensure the Community Center is accessible to tenants and has everything it needs to run smoothly
- Provide crisis intervention and head of household (parent)/child intervention as needed
- Advocate with external community resources; provide referrals as needed
- Meet documentation requirements as dictated by program needs
- Provide oversight for volunteers supporting community building activities at your primary site
Supplemental Job Duties:
- Attend weekly team meetings
- Attend regular meetings with Supervisor for goal planning and review of progress
- Respond to tenant complaints
- This position may require occasional work outside of normal business hours (M-F 9:00-5:00)
Required Qualifications
- At least one year's experience in human services working people who are homeless, with mental illness, chronic health issues, and/or addiction disorders or similar populations
- Safe Serve, Adult, Infant and Pediatric CPR and First Aid Certifications (can be completed upon hiring)
Desired Qualifications & Experience
- BA degree in social or behavioral science preferred
- Experience with or working knowledge of community organizing
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Highly positive and enthusiastic attitude and strong commitment toward helping those in need
- Interest and experience in working with individuals who are difficult to engage and refer to traditional programs; ability to engage with individuals in their current stage of change. Experience with or acceptance of harm reduction principles
- Ability to work flexible hours as required by programs and staffing needs

A valid Michigan Chauffeur driver's license and reliable transportation are required.
