Job Overview
The Home Visitor-Toymaking Instructor is responsible for making home visits and observing the parent interaction with the child using the toy made in the AVANCE toymaking class, and providing appropriate referrals for needed services when necessary and creating a welcoming atmosphere at all times for AVANCE internal employees and AVANCE external program participants.
Job Responsibilities
- Makes home visits and video tapes mothers playing and interacting with their children using the AVANCE toy.
- Schedules appointments with participants for home visits.
- Distributes food bank commodities as needed in the home to clients and record disbursements.
- Recruits program participants.
- Conducts participant intakes as needed.
- Accesses community resources and services to participants.
- Makes observations and write notes of parents teaching the child at home using the AVANCE toy.
- Assists participants by providing information on available resources and services.
- Advocates on behalf of the families.
- Makes referrals to HOPE and follow-up with Parent Educator.
- Follows time line for toymaking sessions
- Prepares for toy making lesson and reproduces sufficient handouts.
- Purchases toy making supplies and maintains inventory records
- Sews, cuts and otherwise prepares toymaking materials for class and maintains an exhibit sample of all toys.
- Conducts toymaking sessions and gives out Possibility Sheets.
- Maintains proper financial records of purchases and submits to Coordinator.
- Maintains sign-in sheets for toy making.
- Maintains toymaking records (# of toys, # of clients attending sessions) and prepares monthly report to be turned in to the Parent Educator
- Keeps adequate storage and retrieval system for toymaking.
- Maintains clean, attractive, and safe work area.
- Participates in special fundraising events.
- Engages parents for special events and field trips (ex. graduation).
- Performs other tasks as requested by Parent Educator.
For Programs Implemented Outside of AVANCE Center:
- Responsible for preparing, providing and transporting all necessary materials and supplies to complete projects at each individual site.
- Assures that available space at the site is left in original condition (cleaning and pick-up area)
- Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
Education
Required:
- AVANCE Graduate and High School Diploma or GED. Bilingual in English and Spanish.
Preferred:
- Associate degree in education
License/Certification
Required:
- Driver’s License and Insurance
Work Experience
Required:
- Volunteer or paid experience with community groups, church or school. Literacy adequate to perform job responsibilities
Additional Skills
- Must be able to speak and read well in both Spanish and English.
- Must have personal transportation
- Verbal and writing skills to maintain records. Resourceful; organized; budgeting and purchasing skills.

- Work is generally performed in an office environment.
- Noise level in the work environment is moderate to occasionally loud (examples: business office with computers and printers, light to moderate traffic, human voices).

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
Environmental Factors
Occasional exposure to: biological hazards (communicable diseases, bacteria, insects, mold, fungi, etc.). Occasional expose to weather related conditions when working in outside environment/neighborhoods and events.
