Job Overview
In the role of a custodian, the individual is expected to provide a safe and clean environment for children, parents, visitors, and staff to allow for full participation in both indoor and outdoor activities.
Job Responsibilities
- Promotes and models the organization's Core Values.
- Ensures the safety and well-being of children, parents, visitors, and staff at all times.
- Follows program confidentiality policies concerning information about children, families, and other staff members.
- Ensures all applicable safety standards are being followed concerning facilities (indoors and outdoors) and reporting any improvement, repairs, or replacement items that do not meet the safety standards.
- Lead, motivate, and evaluate custodial personnel assigned to the facility/department.
- Maintains a checklist of equipment, furniture, and play areas that need to be inspected on an ongoing basis.
- Keep the school building and grounds, including sidewalks, driveways, parking lots, and play areas, neat and clean.
- Ensure outdoor areas are free of broken glass, stones, and sharp objects, standing water, poisonous plants, brush, and high grass.
- Train custodians in proper cleaning procedures and care and maintenance of custodian equipment.
- Assist in maintaining an inventory of cleaning supplies and equipment and request additional supplies as needed.
- Maintain reports, records, and other documents applicable to the position.
- Checks the facilities for damage or other conditions that present hazards to children and/or staff (e.g. plumbing, electrical, structural problems) and reports findings to the Center Director.
- Stores cleaning materials, detergents, aerosol cans, pesticides, chemicals used in lawn care treatments, and other products in their original labeled containers, entirely separated from food, and out of children’s reach.
- Uses materials according to the manufacturer’s instructions, only for their intended purpose, and in a manner that will not contaminate play surfaces, toys, food, or food preparation areas.
- Ensures that facilities are well-lit and provide emergency lighting in case of power failure.
- Vacuum all carpets, sweep, and mop all uncarpeted floors with a sanitizing solution at least daily and when soiled.
- Sanitizes mops thoroughly before and after a day of use.
- Cleans and sanitizes restrooms, toilets, toilet training equipment, and fixtures when soiled, or at least daily.
- Keeps trash and garbage containers covered and in designated areas and complies with all local laws and procedures for storage and disposal of waste.
- Move furniture or equipment within the building as directed per work order.
- Submit work orders to the HISD Operations Department as needed.
- Assist with opening and closing the building each school day checking to ensure all exit doors are unlocked and all panic bolts are working properly during hours of building occupancy. Follow established procedures for locking, checking, and safeguarding facilities.
- Attends training as required.
- Ensure compliance with CDC and OSHA standards and regulations.
- Follow district safety protocols and emergency procedures.
- Other duties as assigned.
Education
Required:
- High School Diploma or GED
- At least six months working in a related field and familiar with Safety Rules and Regulations.
Preferred:
- At least two years’ previous experience in janitorial/maintenance work.
Additional Skills Required
- Good interpersonal skills.
- Possess good verbal and written communication skills.
- Accurate, detail-oriented, and able to meet deadlines.
- Knowledge of minor repair techniques and building and grounds maintenance.
- Ability to lift, transport, and operate cleaning equipment.
- Meet the physical requirements of the position description.
- Able to handle multiple tasks at one time.
- Must have dependable transportation daily, valid driver’s license, clean driving record, current auto liability insurance, and be insurable by AVANCE - San Antonio.
- Must be able to lift, move, push, or pull 10-75 lbs. frequently.

Working Conditions
Mental and Physical Demands
Maintain emotional control under stress; work with interruptions and deadlines; walking, standing, stooping, bending, pulling, and pushing; occasional: lifting/carrying, pulling/pushing 10-75 pounds. Able to stand and walk approximately 95% for the standard work hours. Work may involve unusual or extended working hours, including evenings and weekends.
Environmental Factors
Occasional exposure to biological hazards (communicable diseases, bacteria, insects, mold, fungi, etc.). Occasional exposure to weather related conditions when working in outside environment/neighborhoods and events.
