The base salary for this position is dependent upon experience and location ranging from $114,332 - $142,916

Job Summary

The Senior Civil Engineers are responsible for managing the civil and structural engineering scope and supporting construction activities for a selection of utility-scale onshore wind, solar, and battery storage projects. Working closely with the Project Team and Project Directors, this person will coordinate requirements and deliverables with multiple internal and external stakeholders.

  • In addition to strong conceptual and practical civil and / or structural engineering knowledge and experience, the successful candidate will have a proven track-record of initiative and effective problem-solving.
  • The person in this position will manage internal and external resources to achieve results while coordinating requirements and deliverables with multiple internal and external entities. This position will work collaboratively with other Civil Engineers, as well as Electrical Engineers, as part of the Project Engineering group within the Projects Team.
  • Project Engineers work closely with the Development Engineers, Project Developers, Project Managers / Directors, and Site Construction Managers and Inspectors, juggling multiple projects in various stages of Development and Construction. Agility and flexibility are required in this position.
  • Project Engineers also provide input to the Development Engineering Team, during Development Phase, as well as technical expertise to Operations Team, in Operational Phase, of Projects.

Experience / Education

  • 5 years of relevant experience
  • Experience leading renewable energy projects is preferred.
  • Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or equivalent education; preference may be giving to candidates with relevant advanced degree(s)

Responsibilities

  • Manage / Support activities for engineering design, construction, and project close-out / turnover to Operations, associated with the construction of new renewable energy projects.
  • Technical evaluation and design support for operating projects; and preliminary design and feasibility during project development.
  • Managing the engineering scope (single or multiple disciplines) of several approved projects. Engineering scope may include, but not be limited to:
    • Geotechnical Engineering;
    • Foundation Designs (including, depending on project technology, mass concrete, concrete slabs for buildings and steel piles);
    • Transportation Studies;
    • Road Layouts and Design;
    • Stormwater Management;
    • Erosion and Sedimentation Controls;
    • Grading; and
    • Drainage.
  • Lead / manage engineering implementation, including cost estimating, project scheduling, permit integration into project plans, engineering document control, and other activities necessary during project engineering and construction.
  • Review and approval of civil and structural engineering (designs and work; including coordinating the multidisciplinary (engineering, land, permitting, development, etc.) review of detailed project drawing submittals.
  • Oversee quality aspects of engineering and construction, including ensuring compliance with design standards and accuracy of final documentation and test data.
  • Serve as a member of the project management team which oversees all implementation activities for assigned renewable energy projects.
  • Develop alternate methods or design concepts to resolve problems or to improve project competitiveness.
  • Support the development of EPC contractor bid packages and evaluate bids, as part of the procurement process for construction services.
  • Contribute to development and maintenance of Avangrid design standards and criteria for project infrastructure.
  • Coordinate with Site Managers and QA/QC inspectors to oversee quality aspects of engineering and construction, including ensuring compliance with design standards and accuracy of final documentation and test data.
  • Advise Development Engineering Team in project development, planning and design together with the Environmental & Permitting, Meteorology, Land, and Transmission Interconnect teams.
  • Manage and provide oversight of external professionals (e.g. consultant and contractors) who provide technical expertise and project support through development, design, construction, and operations.
  • Coordinate and maintain project documentation for due diligence review by an independent engineering firm.
  • Provide technical support to plant operations as may be required for project infrastructure, facilities, and systems.
  • Support offshore business as needed.
  • Ensure all relevant internal controls are followed. Assist in development of new controls as needed.
  • Conduct safety observations during site visits to support Corporate safety goals.
  • Serve as a role model and mentor to other engineers.
  • Represent Avangrid in relevant industry meetings/conferences, committees, associations, and/or working groups.
Knowledge & Skills

  • Working knowledge of consulting services and construction contracts.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to understand technical documentation related to renewable energy projects such as permitting documents, local codes and regulations, civil, geotechnical reports, hydrology models/reports, SWPPP, SPCC and construction specifications.
  • Proficiency using applications such as MS Office, Word, Excel, MS Project, Visio, AutoCAD Civil 3D, Google Earth, SAP, and other database managements systems is beneficial.
  • Ability and willingness to travel 30-40% of the time.

Strong preference may be given to candidates with the following:

  • Professional Engineer (Civil) Registration.
  • Advanced degree(s) in Engineering or Business.
