Purpose

Plans, directs and oversees the Accounting Department. Produces financial statements, financial, statistical and informational reports. In collaboration with peers, compiles the annual operating budget, including income and expenses and documents methodologies and variances in the budget. Ensures regulatory reporting is accurate and timely and all supporting documentation is maintained in support of each filing. Supports ALCO. Recommends the development and implementation of accounting and finance process, programs and strategies in support of attaining organizational goals efficiently and effectively and within regulatory, GAAP and internal policies and procedures. Provides technical and professional support to staff and peers. Backs up the SVP/Chief Financial Officer in the areas of forecasting, investing, and planning as needed. Hires staff, conducts performance appraisals, establishes performance expectations and moves to performance improvement plans and disciplinary actions timely when needed. Performs duties in compliance with regulatory requirements including, but not limited to, the Bank Secrecy Act.

Essential Functions & Responsibilities

  • Oversees, directs and leads the Accounting Department in accomplishing assigned duties and responsibilities timely and accurately.
  • Makes operationally sound decisions, delegates appropriately and communicates effectively.
  • Responsible for developing/recommending the department’s budget, annual plan and routine reporting of the same.
  • Oversees and manages the financial accounting functions of the Credit Union including, but not limited to, Accounts Payable, receivables, general ledger reconciliations, fixed assets, prepaid expenses, accruals, inventory, operating expenses, financial analysis, cost analysis, financial reporting and recordkeeping, payroll and taxes, Call Report, and other regulatory reporting as needed.
  • Oversees, directs and analyzes the daily cash management of the Credit Union.
  • Oversees and manages the daily and month end general ledger postings.
  • Oversees the wire transfer function.
  • Develops and implements processes, policies, procedures and internal controls related to Accounting functions.
  • Ensures all Balance Sheet accounts are assigned for reconciliation according to activity volumes.
  • Ensures Credit Union bank accounts are reconciled, reviewed and approved daily.
  • Ensures shares and loans, cash accounts and other high-volume accounts are reconciled, reviewed and approved daily.
  • Ensures General Ledger account reconciliations are completed and reviewed monthly and communicates findings to manager.
  • Ensures regulatory reporting is accurate and timely and all supporting documentation is maintained in support of each filing.
  • In collaboration, prepares the annual operating budget including non-interest operating income, and documents the budget for Board approval.
  • Prepares all Budget-Actual Variance reporting monthly, ensuring material variances are accurately communicated.
  • Prepares and/or reviews monthly financial statements, statistical and informational reports and other reports that support the Financial Board Packet and routine management reporting.
  • Ensures all request list items are compiled within established timeframes, meets with auditors/examiners as needed on request list items, and recommends responses to findings.
  • Ensures the segregation of duties and proper internal controls are in place to mitigate and/or reduce risk to the organization.
  • Establishes employee performance expectations, goals, and Individual Development Plans (IDPs).
  • Conducts routine department and employee one-on-one meetings in support of department and individual goals.
  • Conducts timely and accurate staff performance appraisals.
  • Formulates and implements disciplinary action as needed.
  • Recommends new hires, terminations, staff additions/reductions, promotions, transfers and salary adjustments.
  • Builds trust with staff and peers through tact, diplomacy and follow-through.
  • Acts as a mentor and role model to staff and peers.
  • Fosters an atmosphere of teamwork, collaboration, professionalism, and service.
  • Ensures self and staff actions and behaviors are in support of the Strategic Vision, Mission, Pillars, Corporate Values, Team Organizing Principle (TOP) and the GUEST model.
  • Acts within level of authority.
  • Responsible for maintaining current knowledge of and complying with Credit Union policies and procedures and federal and state rules, regulations and laws.
  • Responsible for maintaining current knowledge of and complying with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
  • Ensures Credit Union accounting policies and procedures comply with federal and state rules, regulations and laws and GAAP.
  • Responsible for complying with the Bank Secrecy Act policies and procedures, including attendance at annual training, as directed by the Bank Secrecy Act Officer.
  • Works in the spirit of the credit union’s purpose and values.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications, Requirements, & Skills

Education/Certification


Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting or Finance or related field, Master’s preferred.


Required Experience


Five or more years working in accounting and/or finance, preferably in a financial institution. Three to five-years supervisory/management experience. Experience may be substituted with an equivalent combination of management and leadership coursework and hand-on experience. Experience working with varying levels within a business.


Required Knowledge


Knowledge of financial software applications related to scope of position. Solid understanding of GAAP, internal controls, segregation of duties and accounting theory and practice. Understanding of applicable federal and state laws and regulations, key financial institution processes, institutional policies and procedures, transactional system reports, and reporting systems.
