Avenues in Motion, a community-based nonprofit organization serving northwest New Jersey, is hiring a Community Engagement Specialist to join our dynamic team! Avenues in Motion delivers programs that improve mobility, the environment, and overall quality of life in northwest New Jersey.
The successful candidate will be responsible for facilitating local outreach, communications, and programming with various populations about traffic safety and accessibility. The Community Engagement Specialist will also support other in-person Avenues in Motion programs including educational programming, learn-to-ride bike classes, bike rodeos, and Safe Routes to School activities.
The ideal candidate brings a self-starter mentality, attention to detail, and comfort with public speaking and small focus group facilitation. The Community Engagement Specialist will report directly to the Active Transportation Manager and will work in tandem with other staff members to ensure effective coverage and delivery of the organization’s various programs and activities.
This is a hybrid remote position offering a flexible work schedule, but may require participation in evening meetings/events. Paid weekend work is expected occasionally for this position. The anticipated salary range for this position is $45,000-$50,000 based upon qualifications.
Key Responsibilities:
- Serve as a liaison between Avenues in Motion and local community groups to advance transportation safety goals.
- Plan and facilitate surveys, key informant interviews, and focus group discussions with various audiences to obtain critical feedback for the transportation planning process and to inform future programs for the organization and its funding partners.
- Collect, analyze, and report on anecdotal/qualitative data from other local groups, organizations and individuals, as well as quantitative crash data and other metrics to satisfy grant requirements and inform future strategies.
- Support Avenues in Motion bike and pedestrian programs including learn-to-ride bike classes, walk to school days, bike rodeos, and Safe Routes to School educational programs.
- Support Avenues in Motion communication efforts through targeted content development and outreach.
- Represent the organization at community events such as fairs and festivals.
- Report on activity and share data outcomes on at least a monthly basis for inclusion in grant-required reports
- Work collaboratively with other staff to deliver effective programs
Basic Qualifications:
- BA or BS degree in communications, public health, transportation planning, or related field
- Strong communications, time management, data management, and coordination skills with great attention to detail
- This is a primarily remote work environment; however, we do have regular staff meetings and community events that will require in-person attendance
- Valid NJ Driver’s License and car available for travel
Preferred Skills and Experience:
- Fluency in Spanish
- Flexibility to handle multiple priorities and ability to work quickly and efficiently
- Experience in outreach, communications, public health, and/or transportation planning
- Ability to provide insight and opportunities for improvement
- Passion for transportation safety, equity, mobility, and environmental issues
