A Brief Overview

Assists in drug preparation, storage, distribution and inventory management within a variety of pharmacy environments. Technician works under direct supervision of a registered pharmacist.

What you will do
 

  • Under pharmacist supervision, accurately inputs and/or prepares labels and packages inpatient or outpatient medication orders and prescriptions to maintain an efficient, accurate, and high-quality medication delivery system.
  • Successfully communicates with nursing staff, physicians, customers, co-workers, supervisors, and management and participates in interdepartmental work groups and committees as assigned to promote high-quality communication and prevent patient harm.
  • Demonstrates proficient knowledge of medications, calculations, regulations, and regulation limitations, personal protective equipment, and promotion of patient safety to ensure high-quality patient care and compliance.
  • Performs clerical functions such as, but not limited to, billing, patient demographics and pharmacy inventory to promote an efficient medication distribution system.
  • Assists with the collection and maintenance of records as needed by the Pharmacy Department and applicable accreditations such as Utilization Review Accreditation Commission, Joint Commission, NIOSH, OSHA, or other accreditations as may be required by law, practice standards, or departmental policy to maintain compliance with accreditation entities.
  • May be responsible for assisting customers on the phone or in person.
  • May run reports and use the automated dispensing system. Monthly inspections of medication stocks in assigned areas. Assist with inventory to prevent drug shortages or excesses.
  • Proficiency of compounding practices, i.e. botox, chemotherapy.

Required Education, License/Certification, or Work Experience:
 

  • Registered Pharmacy Technician - Board of Pharmacy An active license in the state of practice Upon Hire and
  • Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) - National Healthcareer Association (NHA) Upon Hire or
  • Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) - Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) Upon Hire


Preferred Education, License/Certification, or Work Experience:
 

  • High School or GED Equivalent
  • Less than 1 year

A Brief Overview

Assists in drug preparation, storage, distribution, and inventory management within a variety of pharmacy environments. It is recommended this entry-level position participates in and completes Avera Health's Pharmacy Technician Education Program to prepare for Certified Pharmacy Technician examination. Upon successful Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) examination, or other approved certifying body, the technician-in-training will be promoted into the role of Pharmacy Technician. Avera's Pharmacy Technician Education Program consists of combined didactic, simulation, and experiential learning activities. Avera requires a two-year employment commitment upon completion of the Pharmacy Technician Education Program. Technician-in-Training works under direct supervision of a registered pharmacist.

  • Recommended to participate in and complete Avera Pharmacy Technician Education Program to ensure the ability to become PTCB certified and registered as a Pharmacy Technician.
  • Under Pharmacist supervision, accurately inputs and/or prepares labels and packages inpatient or outpatient medication orders and prescriptions to maintain an efficient, accurate, and high-quality medication delivery system.
  • Demonstrates proficient knowledge of medications, calculations, regulation, and regulation limitations, personal protective equipment, and promotion of patient safety to ensure high-quality patient care and compliance.

  • Certified Pharmacy Technician - Board of Pharmacy Pharmacy Technician Board Certification or alternative approved training/certification program. Extensions beyond 1 year may be available in some states within 1 Year

  • Demonstrates proficient knowledge of medications, calculations, regulations and regulation limitations, personal protective equipment, and promotion of patient safety to ensure high-quality patient care and compliance.
  • Performs clerical functions such as, but not limited to, billing and pharmacy inventory to promote an efficient medication distribution system.
  • Assists with the collection and maintenance of records as needed by the Pharmacy Department and applicable accreditations such as Utilization Review Accreditation Commission, Joint Commission Accreditation, NIOSH, OSHA, and other accreditations as may be required by law, practice standards, or departmental policy to maintain compliance with accreditation entities.
  • Maintains competence in at least two (2) specialized roles within the Pharmacy Department to support pharmacy operations and patient care activities. Competency areas may include: 1) Tech-Check-Tech, 2) Technician, Educator or Trainer, 3) USP 797 and/or USP 800 super-user, 4) Advanced pharmacy quality assurance monitoring, 5) Obtains patient medication histories, 6) chemotherapy/hazardous medication compounding certified, 7) decentralized pharmacy technician, 8) Pharmacy repackaging technician, 9) Assists with research or patient assistance program support, or 10) Advanced role in pharmacy inventory management. Each region's competency areas may vary based on size and scope. Discuss competency areas with area leader.
