What are the responsibilities and job description for the Foster Care Social Worker position at Avery DSS?
The primary function of this position is to provide counseling and case management services for children who have been removed from their homes due to abuse, neglect, or inappropriate supervision. Work involves placement of children in approved foster homes and kinship placements as prescribed by federal and state guidelines, provide expert testimony in court hearings, and follow-up with case management and preventive services for clients; will serve on rotation-basis to cover after-hours duty with other social workers. Responsibilities include assessment, evaluation, development, treatment, placement, goal and service planning, monitoring, maintenance, consultation, and community liaison. Other duties as assigned by supervisor.
Educational/Experience Requirements: Master’s degree from an accredited school of social work and one year of social work or counseling experience; or Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited school of social work and two years of social work or counseling experience; or a Master’s Degree in a counseling field and two years of social work or counseling; or a four year degree in a human services field or related curriculum including at least 15 semester hours in courses related to social work or counseling and three years of social work or counseling experience; or graduation from a four year college or university and four years’ experience in rehabilitation counseling, pastoral counseling, or human services field providing experience in the techniques of casework, group work, or community organization; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. (NOTE: Applications for Social Worker II, Social Worker I and Social Worker I Trainee will be accepted for consideration for a possible “Work Against” appointment, if recruitment for a qualified Social Worker III is unsuccessful. )
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required Thorough knowledge of social work principles, techniques, and practices, and their application to complex casework, group work, and community problems. Considerable knowledge of family and group dynamics and a range of intervention techniques. Considerable knowledge of governmental and private organizations and resources in the community. Considerable knowledge of behavioral and socio-economic problems and their treatment. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with administrative superiors, families and children, and civic, medical, social, and religious organizations. Ability to express ideas clearly and concisely and to plan and execute work effectively; and ability to learn and be proficient in the use of the Family Services computer system. Computer skills, valid driver’s license, good driving record and own transportation required. Must be able to lift and carry a child.
