Job Description: Veterinary Assistant
Job Overview:
The Veterinary Assistant will provide and assist with proper animal care, cleaning protocols, low stress animal handling and other standard operating procedures at all times.
Responsibilities:
· Assist the Veterinarian, Veterinary Nurses/Technicians, with exams, treatments, and procedures.
· Feed and orally medicate animals of many species
· Follow proper feeding and medicating instructions
· Assist staff with taking in boarding patients
· Clean and organize all areas of hospital daily
· Stock all areas of the hospital including exam rooms, treatment, surgery, pharmacy and lab areas.
· Laundry upkeep including washing, drying, and folding
· Safely and properly dispose of biomedical waste
· Clean, wrap, and sterilize surgery instruments and material by following proper protocols
· Operate ultrasonic cleanser and autoclave
Assistants are NOT authorized to:
· Handle controlled substances
· Perform euthanasia
· Induce anesthesia
· Intubate patients
· Perform cystocentesis
· Perform laboratory testing
· Perform dental prophylaxis
Position Requirements:
Education:
High School Diploma or equivalent preferred
Experience:
Experience in a veterinary clinic, shelter, kennel or similar environment preferred
Licensure or Certification:
Valid Florida driver’s license
Shift Times:
· Week Days
o 7:30am – 1pm (Half Day)
o 1pm – Close (Half Day)
o 7:30am – Close (Full Day)
· Saturday
o 7:30am- Close (2pm)
Staff should expect to stay up to one hour passed hospital closing time
Personal Requirements:
- Excellent communication skills with both staff and clients
- Ability to recognize that teamwork is essential for a quality practice
- Interest in marketing and growth of the practice
- REQUIREMENTS
- Display tact and diplomacy with staff members and clients
- Be flexible in attitude and work habits within a rapidly changing environment
- Participate in required meetings and training
- Possess a genuine concern for animals and their welfare
- Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information with discretion
- Working knowledge of hospital SOPs
- Working knowledge of applicable OSHA and DEA standards and requirements
- Ability to operate computer, printer, copier, telephone, fax machine and smartphone
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office and Avimark
Physical Demands:
- Moderate physical effort including, but not limited to lifting or moving up to 25 pounds and occasionally up to 50 pounds
- Walking and prolonged standing
- Stooping, kneeling, bending and crouching
- Carrying, pushing and/or pulling
- Facility operations include areas of high noise levels

Pay: $15.00 - $17.00 per hour
Expected hours: 10 – 30 per week
