Aviva Systems Biology, Inc. (“Aviva”) is a privately held mid stage life sciences research tools company located in San Diego, California. Aviva commercializes life science tools and reagents for research, drug discovery, and diagnostics.
Position Summary:
Aviva is seeking a talented & dynamic individual to fill the position of Controller in our San Diego, California office. The ideal candidate will be an experienced accountant that embraces working collaboratively with a small group of very experienced science and sales professionals. They will have a “roll-up your sleeves” attitude to personally solve problems and challenges by analyzing data, developing process-based solutions, and applying compliant and sound accounting practices. The position will be responsible for supporting Aviva’s Accounting and Reporting function in performing the monthly, quarterly and yearly activities. This position will also be responsible for supporting human resource administration for the Aviva office.
This position is based in Aviva’s San Diego office and is an onsite position.
Key Responsibilities:
- Maintain accurate general ledger
- Lead the month-end close
- External reporting of financial statements and related information to management and other key stakeholders
- Create and maintain accounting policies and procedures
- Support the annual operating plan process and developing monthly forecasts
- Supervise and provide day-to-day assistance to accounting staff
- Work closely with tax and treasury personnel to ensure GAAP accounting records accurately reflect all group cash movements and properly support tax compliance activities
- Monthly/quarterly/annual reporting, including subsidiary stand-alone and consolidated financial statements and various schedules/statistics
- Review and perform account reconciliations for various balance sheet accounts
- Identify and support our continuous improvement initiatives
- Provide human resources support, including payroll review, 401(k), insurance, new employee orientation, maintain HR files and employee handbook and coordinate hiring and termination
- Other ad-hoc requests
Required Skills:
- Extensive experience with month-end closing of the books and consolidation entries
- Good basic understanding of generally accepted accounting principles (“GAAP”)
- Advanced Excel skills
- ERP system and control procedure compliance

Experience and Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance or business required
- 5-7 years of progressive accounting experience with at least 1-2 years of managing a staff
- Experience closing books
- CPA highly preferred, but not required
- Other important areas where experience is preferred but not required:
o Income tax compliance and tax return preparation experience
o Sales/Use tax compliance
o Family office work environments
o Financial software experience; Oracle NetSuite a plus
o General manufacturing experience
o HR administration support
