AVONWORTH SCHOOL DISTRICT
Custodial Employees
Position Title: 12 Month Custodian
Department: Custodial – AESPA Contract
Reports to: Supervisor of Buildings & Grounds/Maintenance Supervisor
Term: Twelve Months
Shift: 3PM - 11:30PM
Custodians shall be under the general direction of the Building and Grounds Supervisor, Maintenance Supervisor, and the direct supervision of the Head Custodian of their respective building principal.
Custodians shall maintain at all times proper demeanor, being kind and courteous to pupils, staff and community members and cooperating with the teaching staff in maintaining order in the corridors and school grounds, and performing such reasonable services as the teachers and principal may require.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The twelve month custodian must be capable of performing the following functions:
- Uniforms are provided by the District and must be worn at all times by all custodial and maintenance employees, unless the Building and Grounds Supervisor grants an exception.
- Neatness and cleaning of uniforms is the responsibility of the employee
- A photo identification badge will be provided to the employee. This badge must be visibly worn at all times.
- All employees shall not use objective language on school grounds.
- Use of tobacco, illegal drugs and/or alcohol in any school building and on school property is strictly prohibited at all times and is cause for immediate termination.
- Custodial personnel shall remain on the premises of their assigned building during the prescribed working hours unless the Building and Grounds Supervisor gives an exception.
- Any change of shift time must be approved by the Building and Grounds Supervisor.
Report to the Head Custodian:
1. Reports promptly to the Head Custodian with any conditions that need to be remedied or repaired. The Head Custodian must then put in a work order.
2. Requisitions for equipment or materials for the proper discharge of their duties shall be made by the custodian through the Head Custodian.
3. Windows shall be cleaned as scheduled by the Head Custodian although entrance glass should be cleaned daily.
Reports to Building and Grounds Supervisor:
1. Report to the Building and Grounds Supervisor who in turn will report to the Principal with the names of pupils who damage or deface walls or property.
2. Minor repairs shall be made upon the direction of the Building and Grounds Supervisor or Maintenance Supervisor and no materials are to be purchased by the custodian, except upon approval of the Building and Grounds Supervisor.
- An inventory of all materials and supplies on hand such as paint, varnish, floor wax, towels, toilet paper, soap, tools, etc. shall be made and presented to the Building and Grounds Supervisor.
- In the event it is necessary for custodians to be absent during the workday, they must report their absence to the Building and Grounds Supervisor a minimum of 4 hours in advance.
- The custodian is not permitted to authorize the use of the District’s facilities for any reason without the written consent of the Buildings and Grounds Supervisor and the Director of Fiscal Management and Support Services.
Maintenance of Individual Buildings:
1. Responsible for the general condition of the building and grounds committed to their charge
2. Rooms shall be properly heated or cooled and ready to receive pupils one-half hour before school opens and have a temperature that is healthful with proper air circulation.
3. School rooms shall be swept and dusted daily and damp mopped when needed.
4. School doors shall be locked at a designated time and opened at proper times in the morning.
5. Walks and steps and all escape routes shall be kept clear of snow and ice. (When ice cannot be removed from sidewalks and steps, they shall be kept well covered with salt, calcium chloride, or other non-slip materials.)
6. Custodians shall guard against waste of natural gas, water, light and power.
7. Custodians shall be familiar with the heating and ventilating systems of their respective buildings.
8. A daily inspection of all playground equipment at the Elementary School must be conducted for safety and liability reasons.
SPECIFIC ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF ALL CUSTODIANS
A. Custodial Closets
1. All custodians shall have all containers containing chemicals labeled including spray bottles.
2. All custodial closets shall be kept locked at all times.
3. No supplies or equipment shall be removed from the premises or used for personal reasons except upon direct orders from the custodial supervisor.
4. The custodian shall see that the custodial closet is properly arranged and stored in an orderly fashion and kept clean at all times.

5. All custodians should have on hand or know where the chemical MSDS sheets are kept.
B. Equipment
1. All custodians shall be responsible for the condition, safety, and proper operation of all equipment at all times and reporting any damaged or in need of repair equipment to the Head Custodian. Always properly clean and store equipment after each use.
2. The custodian shall not send any supplies or equipment to other buildings without permission of the Building and Grounds Supervisor.
C. Grounds
1. Lawns
a. The custodians shall see that all rubbish, stones, paper, dry leaves, or other debris are removed from school grounds as needed.
b. The Head Custodian shall inspect the lawns and grounds daily to keep a safe and attractive appearance.
2. Doors/Gates
a. The custodians shall monitor the buildings regularly to ensure that all doors (both internal and external) are locked except those that have been designated to be unlocked.
3. Events/Extracurricular Activities
a. The custodian shall monitor the buildings during events/extracurricular activities to ensure that the persons attending are accessing only designated areas.
4. Summer Cleaning
a. During the summer vacation period, custodians shall perform such duties as may be delegated to them by the Building and Grounds Supervisor. This shall include but is not limited to cleaning and washing of all windows, walls and finished woodwork where necessary, scrubbing all floors, polishing all desks, painting and varnishing where necessary, cleaning all yards and having their buildings and grounds inspected and approved before school opens by the building and Grounds Supervisor.
