Job Description:
Data Architect in a data migration project is to design and oversee the structured transfer between source (Oracle) to target systems ensuring data integrity, security, and compliance. Data Architect can establish the migration framework, define data mapping and transformation rules, and optimize database structures to support scalability and performance. Additionally, they collaborate with stakeholders to mitigate risks, address data quality challenges, and ensure seamless system integration.
A Data Architect involved in Oracle to SQL Server data migration should possess the following skillsets:
Technical Skills:
- In-depth knowledge of Oracle (PL/SQL) and SQL Server (T-SQL)
- Experience with Oracle and SQL Server data types, indexing, partitioning, and performance tuning
- Strong understanding of Oracle-to-SQL Server migration challenges, including schema conversion, stored procedure translation, and query optimization
- Proficiency in Microsoft Data Migration Assistant (DMA), SQL Server Migration Assistant (SSMA)
- Experience with ETL tools such as SSIS (SQL Server Integration Services), Informatica, Talend
- Hands-on experience in bulk data migration using BCP, BULK INSERT, OPENQUERY, or linked servers
- Expertise in relational database design, normalization, and denormalization strategies
- Ability to design high-performance OLTP and OLAP architectures
- Experience with database refactoring to accommodate SQL Server's best practices and constraints
- Strong skills in query tuning, execution plans, and indexing strategies
- Understanding of performance bottlenecks in Oracle vs. SQL Server, such as parallelism, locking mechanisms, and I/O operations
- Experience with SQL Database, SQL Managed Instances
Soft Skills:
- Analytical Thinking: Ability to analyze legacy Oracle structures and optimize them for SQL Server.
- Problem-Solving: Identifying and resolving data compatibility issues (e.g., handling Oracle-specific data types, cursors, and triggers).
- Collaboration & Communication: Working closely with DBAs, developers, and business stakeholders to ensure a smooth migration process.
- Documentation & Compliance: Documenting migration strategies, risks, and post-migration validation checks.
