About Us

Founded in 2021, Alice L. Walton School of Medicine (AWSOM) is a nonprofit, four-year MD program enhancing traditional medical education with the arts, humanities, and whole health principles. The School’s culture embraces self-care to empower students to care for their own well-being as well as their patients’. The School’s state-of-the-art medical education facility is under construction in Bentonville, Arkansas on the Crystal Bridges campus, home to Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art and Heartland Whole Health Institute. The School has been granted preliminary accreditation status by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education.

What We Seek

We are building a cadre of medical professionals trained in conventional medicine and in whole health, by reimagining medical education. We seek leaders and faculty who are excited by this endeavor. Faculty and staff members will contribute to the development and rollout of the ARCHES curriculum, which is built on evidence-based approaches to teaching and learning. It includes the following six core elements:

  • Science of Medicine

All six areas of the curriculum will be interwoven throughout the four-year curriculum.

About The Position

We are seeking Clerkship Directors in these disciplines to assist with course development for required clerkships beginning in August/September 2025. We are seeking physicians in the following disciplines with a strong interest in medical education to assume the position of Clerkship Director for the following Core Clerkships:

  • Internal Medicine
  • Pediatrics
  • Surgery
  • Obstetrics & Gynecology
  • Neurology
  • Psychiatry
  • Family Medicine/Primary Care
  • Emergency Medicine

Clerkships may each accommodate up to 8 medical students at a time. It is anticipated that this position will assume up to 20 hours of an individual’s time each week who has other active clinical or call responsibilities.

Clerkship directors engage in several critical activities that impact the undergraduate medical education students at AWSOM including planning, administration, education/teaching, and assessment of students.  Clerkship directors also will support the recruitment and training of preceptors, and compliance with accreditation standards in collaboration with the AWSOM Office of Curricular Affairs.

Position Rank/Classification

The position is open at the Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, or Professor levels, depending on experience and qualifications.

Major Responsibilities/Essential Functions Specific to the Position:

  • Participate in training and orientation to the role provided by AWSOM.
  • Serve as Course Director of the core clerkship, to include planning, implementation, and evaluation of the rotation in accordance with the AWSOM curriculum and program objectives:
    • Develop the course syllabus.
    • Develop and communicate student schedules in conjunction with the clerkship coordinator.
    • Conduct clerkship orientation activities.
    • Meet with students for mid-clerkship feedback sessions.
    • Ensure students track patient encounter types in Canvas.
    • Ensure each student is observed performing portions of the history and physical examination and is provided timely feedback.
    • Ensure students adhere to duty hour policy.
    • Prepare and submit final grades including narrative comments, based on preceptors’ evaluations, within four weeks of the completion of the clerkship rotation.
    • Respond to student concerns or questions about the clerkship.
  • Liaise with health system partners and AWSOM.
  • Recruit and train preceptors.
  • Actively learn about best practices in medical education; participate in faculty development activities offered by AWSOM as interested.
  • Work with other course directors and faculty to support curricular integration.
  • Attend monthly meetings of the Phase 3 and 4 subcommittee of the AWSOM Curriculum Committee.
  • Discuss student progress at frequent intervals with relevant faculty and staff at AWSOM.
  • Collaborate with the Office of Student Affairs in matters regarding student requests for accommodations, exam delays, requests from students for absences. Communicate unexcused student absences from required clerkship activities to Student Affairs.
  • Work with the clerkship affiliate site coordinators to achieve consistent clerkship experiences across all sites.
  • Implement and document appropriate changes in clerkship based upon ongoing self-assessment as well as student evaluations, changes in school or national directives, and directives from the Curriculum Committee.
  • Promptly address student reports and concerns of professionalism issues of faculty or resident educators or staff members; as circumstances warrant, facilitate necessary corrective action in accordance with AWSOM policy.
  • Ensure compliance with Liaison Committee on Medical Education requirements for required clinical education.
  • Participate in important school events such as graduation.

Minimum Education

  • M.D., D.O., from a Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME)/American Osteopathic Association Commission on Osteopathic Colleges Accreditation (COCA) accredited institution.
  • Completion of an Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) accredited residency program in respective specialty.

Minimum Work Experiences

  • Five years of clinical practice in specialty

Preferred Work Experiences and Qualifications

  • Board certified in specialty
  • Experience as an educator/preceptor in undergraduate medical education in an accredited medical school
  • Experience in medical education administration
  • Strong interest in medical student education
