Under the technical supervision of the laboratory director or manager, provides general supervision in coordinating the activities of the specimen handling (accessioning) department within the laboratory as a whole.
Essential Duties
- Responsibility for day-to-day supervision and/or oversight of departmental personnel engaged in performing routine and specialized specimen handling procedures, including planning laboratory work, evaluating work performed and handling procedural and technical laboratory problems.
- Supervise various personnel functions including, but not limited to interviewing, hiring, performance appraisals. Oversees the orientation of new employees and ensures that they are adequately trained to perform assigned duties. Develops and maintains accessioning staff on-the-job training for newly hired staff. Assesses the education needs for department staff and makes recommendations for continuing education programs. Ensures that staff is competent to perform assigned tasks.
- Design appropriate work schedules for employees and plan daily work assignments in order to maintain an adequate personnel complement for laboratory efficiency within department budget. Coordinate and approve vacation schedules.
- Responsibility for the direct supervision of Specimen Management. Monitor accessioning to ensure that acceptable levels of pre-analytic performance are maintained. Ensure that laboratory tests are ordered according to department protocols and are handled in a timely manner. Remain accessible for the department either with on site presence or remotely.
- Develop and implement departmental quality control programs to ensure reliability of specimen management procedures, proper function of specimen handling laboratory equipment and compliance with federal regulations; prepare and maintain applicable records. Ensures that systems are in place to provide test orders that are valid and accurate. Maintains adequate quality control measures. Perform daily patient order and quality control reviews and take appropriate corrective action.
- Assists Laboratory Management in planning and performing Quality Assurance and Compliance monitoring. Monitor Quality, Safety and Inspection Control practices to assure compliance with internal and external regulations.
- Maintain sufficient inventory of material supplies and equipment for performance of duties; clean and maintain standard laboratory equipment with budgetary guidelines.
- Communicate in a professional and courteous manner with staff, and other medical personnel as necessary to obtain information for laboratory records, explain procedures, clarify orders and communicate status. Interact courteously with providers, nurses and other healthcare providers when answering questions or providing other information.
- Interpret accrediting agencies standards or guidelines for departmental testing and translates requirement into policies and procedures; initiate corrective action as soon as deficiency is identified; complete checklist and other information sheets required and coordinates on-site inspection of section(s) for which responsible.
- Participate in the development of new laboratory standard operating procedures and techniques; plan, develop presentations as appropriate.
- Provide advanced problem solving, troubleshooting, interpretation/consultation, verification of specimen quality and test ordering.
- Stay abreast of and execute latest technical and supervisory developments including new lab procedures.
- Demonstrate decision-making abilities in all aspects of performance.
- Assist in performing applicable duties of Laboratory Manager in his/her absence.
- Perform Specimen Management tasks as needed.
- Perform other job-related duties as assigned by the Medical Director and Laboratory Manager.
- Promote and enforce corporate, laboratory, and departmental policies, procedures, and standards of Axia Women’s Health, keeping in compliance with accreditation and licensure requirements.
