Program Underwriting Manager – Specialty Casualty
Hybrid New York City
The Program Underwriting Manager – Specialty Casualty is responsible for the product management of all specialty casualty products (both ISO and manuscript) distributed across all delegated underwriting authorities within the North American Programs department, the overall management of assigned programs, and the evaluation of new program submissions.
Candidate Profile
The Program Underwriting Manager will be a hands-on Program leader with a history of success within a top-tier Commercial Insurance Carrier, building and managing casualty and professional liability Insurance Programs targeting a range of Industries and Affinities.
Ideal Candidates should have a background working with Program Managers, Managing General Agents, or Delegated Underwriting Authority partners to support complex Specialty risks targeting Middle Market & Large Complex accounts with premiums of $75K to $1M.
Candidate must have a grasp on program lifecycle management, including initial vetting, onboarding, monitoring, and optimizing, and if needed, exit. The candidate needs to be experienced with analyzing data and KPI’s to assess the overall health of the portfolio. Additionally, the candidate must have an executive presence, demonstrating success in communicating, influencing, and building solid relationships that add value to the AXIS business book and contribute to longer-term strategic initiatives.
Work Profile
This position is ideal for those based in the New York/New Jersey Metro Area seeking a hybrid work model: 3 days in-office (Tuesday – Thursday) and 2 days remote. Travel is required for industry and company events.
Key Roles & Responsibilities
Product Management
- Responsible for product management for all specialty casualty products across all programs, including those that you do not directly manage.
- Develop and maintain a repository of all products within the specialty casualty family.
- Evaluate and approve all new specialty casualty product development and rate/rule/form changes within the department. Supervise all specialty casualty filings and regulatory compliance.
- Determine product competitiveness, pricing efficacy and market acceptance for all specialty casualty products.
Program Management
- Overall management of assigned programs, to include responsibility for development, implementation, and monitoring of business plans, coordination of AXIS resources, and achievement of financial goals.
- Manage delegated underwriting authority for assigned programs by maintaining program management agreements and underwriting guidelines. Conduct routine underwriting and rate/rule/form audits to ensure compliance.
- Underwrite specialty casualty referral accounts across the department.
- Identify and deliver expansion of AXIS product offering with existing programs.
- Train fellow Program Underwriting Managers with responsibility for programs with specialty casualty products on best-in-class commercial specialty casualty underwriting.
What you need to have:
- Deep expertise in specialty casualty products to include coverage, policy construction, and rating.
- Familiarity with ISONet and navigating the Commercial Lines Manual
- Direct experience in underwriting and managing Delegated Underwriting Authority (PAs, MGAs, MGUs).
- 8 in underwriting Commercial Specialty casualty
- Ability to negotiate contracts, develop business plans, and manage external stakeholders in the deliverance of business plans.
- In-depth financial and underwriting understanding of programs business, with the ability to assess and develop financial projections and forecasts on existing and prospective programs.
- Proficiency in Excel (build models and conduct analyzes), PowerBI, PowerPoint, and Word.

For this position, we currently expect to offer a base salary at or around $240,000 (NY), A salary offer will be based on an assessment of various factors, including specific experience and work location.
In addition, you will be offered target incentive compensation, with awards based on overall corporate and individual performance.
