Job Summary of the Director, SEC Reporting & Technical Accounting
The Director of SEC Reporting and Technical Accounting primary responsibility is the preparation of external financial reporting and assisting the VP, Corporate Controller with technical accounting through write accounting memos/policies, SOX compliance, and risk management. This highly visible position is hands-on in the quarterly and annual reporting process, especially footnotes and disclosures for all SEC and related filings.
The position develops, documents, tests and ensures the adequacy of the accounting controls. Manages accounting functions and prepares reports and statistics detailing financial results. This position will work closely with the outside auditors as well as the financial, planning and analysis group.
Requirements of the Director, SEC Reporting & Technical Accounting
- Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting/Finance, required.
- Certified Public Accountant (CPA) license, required.
- At least ten (10) years of experience, including:
- Experience within a publicly traded company required; life-science industry a plus.
- Prior Big 4 or large regional public accounting experience required.
- Strong knowledge of stock compensation accounting.
- Excellent analytical, organizational and project management skills.
- Ability to work independently and take ownership of assigned tasks and responsibilities.
- Attention to detail and problem-solving ability.
- Dependable and committed to put in additional effort as required to meet tight deadlines.
- Flexible, team oriented and able to succeed in a fast-paced environment.
- Driven to deliver quality results on time, with a high degree of integrity and in a highly ethical and professional manner.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office software. Excel expertise a must.
- Experience with Workiva, a plus.
Responsibilities of the Director, SEC Reporting & Technical Accounting
The specific duties of the Director, SEC Reporting & Technical Accounting include but are not limited to:
- Lead the operations of the financial reporting and stock administration and provide coaching, leadership, and mentoring.
- Lead process improvement and improve efficiency across the team and through relationships with other departments.
- Identify opportunities to improve utilization of financial reporting systems and automation opportunities.
- Prepares periodic reports, including Form 10-K, 10-Q, 8-K, proxy statements, annual report, Section 16 filings, and all other SEC filing documents in compliance with all SEC and US GAAP disclosure requirements.
- Prepares and maintains support for all areas of external reporting process, such as EPS calculations, Consolidated Balance Sheet, Consolidated Income Statement, Statement of Cash Flows, Statement of Stockholders Equity, Footnotes, MD&A and Form 10-K and 10-Q.
- Prepares and manages financial reporting checklists and calendars.
- Oversee stock administration and related accounting treatment.
- Serves as the primary point of contact with the Company’s external auditors as well as the internal audit function.
- Manages Sarbanes-Oxley and COSO compliance program to assure that the Company maintains appropriate internal controls over financial reporting.
- Responsible for keeping current knowledge of GAAP, SEC and industry developments as well as analyzing and communicating the impact to the Company.
- Ensures financial statements are prepared in accordance with US GAAP and SEC regulations, including newly issued accounting pronouncements.
- Research technical accounting issues, draft memos and conclusions, and draft required disclosures.
- Research and drive the implementation of new accounting guidance.
- Prepares reports and filings related to other external reporting requirements (US Census, state annual reporting, grant reporting, etc.).
- Performs the more complex accounting functions.
- Build relationships cross-functionally to foster collaboration both inside and outside of Finance and Accounting.
- Adhoc reporting as needed.
- Perform other duties as assigned by Supervisor.
