Job Summary:
The Department of Economic Security is seeking an experienced and highly motivated individual to join our team as an Occupational Safety Consultant 4 with the Office of Facilities Management.
Job Duties:
• Administers safety inspections, determine appropriate action for violators, complaints, and referrals; conducts informal conferences with violators and recommend appropriate action.
• Assists in the management, planning, coordination, and evaluation of the Department’s occupational safety and health program.
• Provides guidance to DES employees on the evacuation process and oversee emergency action plan and procedure updates and environmental testing.
• Investigates work environments and safety equipment for conditions of compliance and enforcing State and Federal Occupational Safety and Health standards, regulations, laws, rules, and codes.
• Schedules and prioritizes work activities; completes reports and coordinates vendor activity; completes inspection, investigation, or technical reports to include hazard and safety assessments, evaluations, and recommendations for mitigation.
• Serves as a point of contact in accordance with Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA) General Duty Clause and the U.S. Department of Labor standards.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs):
• Knowledge of Applicable Federal, State, and local laws and regulations governing occupational safety standards, codes, and regulations, such as OSHA and ADOSH standards, Arizona Administrative Code R210-et al, industrial hygiene; NIOSH programs.
• Knowledge of EPA guidelines, including the Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act (AHERA), and National Emission Standards for Hazardous Air Pollutants (NESHAP).
• Skill in analyzing and evaluating a wide variety of inspection and investigation data including test results, reports, and plans, drawing logical conclusions, and implementing effective actions.
• Skill in interpersonal relations as applied to contacts with representatives of other governmental agencies, other agency employees, and the public.
• Ability to assess safety requirements in commercial and residential buildings.
• Ability to read and interpret floorplans utilizing AutoCAD LT drafting software.
• Ability to establish effective working relationships with individuals contacted in the course of work.
Selective Preference(s):
• Bachelor's Degree in Occupational Health and Safety or a related field.
• Four years of experience in identifying, preventing, and eliminating safety hazards in work methods or environmental conditions in government or private sector workplaces.
• Significant knowledge and experience with ADA-related activities, OSHA, and EPA regulations; and AHERA certification from accredited providers.
Pre-Employment Requirements:
• Successfully complete the Electronic Employment Eligibility Verification Program (E-Verify), applicable to all newly hired State employees.
• Successfully pass background and reference checks; employment is contingent upon completion of the above-mentioned process and the agency’s ability to reasonably accommodate any restrictions.
• The position will require the possession of and ability to retain a current, valid state-issued driver’s license appropriate to the assignment. Employees who drive on state business are subject to driver’s license record checks, must maintain acceptable driving records, and must complete any driver training (see Arizona Administrative Code R2-10-207.12). Individuals may be required to use their personal motor vehicle.

Retirement:
State employees are required to participate in the Arizona State Retirement System (ASRS), the State-sponsored retirement contribution plan, and the Long-Term Disability (LTD) program after a 27-week waiting period.
