Activity Director Responsibilities and Duties
Plans, schedules and implements an innovative, evidence based, seven days per week (at least five programs per day with one program in the evening) activity program that is engaging and incorporates the following :
o Emotional
o Intellectual
o Physical
o Social
o Spiritual
Organizes and / or conducts outings that are of interest to residents.
Drives residents to and from scheduled outings and events using the community vehicle.
Arranges for resident parties and entertainment.
Promotes participation and individual resident interaction by developing an understanding of resident’s interests and programming to those interests.
Coordinates the development of the in house newsletter with input from residents, employees and guests; oversees the distribution of the newsletter to residents, families, and community groups.
Shows a consistent ability to coordinate multiple tasks, demonstrates a positive attitude and works well under pressure.

Participates in the care planning process by attending care plan meetings, providing specific information and observations of the Guest’s needs, preferences and report any behavioral changes.
Possesses leadership ability and willingness to work harmoniously with and supervise staff assigned to department or projects. Encourages professional growth of personnel.
Social Service Director Duties
- Assists the resident, responsible party, and supportive others in the adjustment and orientation to the nursing home after admission.
- Assures timely progress notes on each resident in the facility.
- Participates in each resident's total plan of care staffing.
- Has a knowledge of the community resources available and use them to benefit and improve the quality of care as applicable for each resident.
- Takes advantage of opportunities to inform and make community aware of the nursing home's need and value to the community.
- Has an open door policy to all residents, family members, and staff to listen to their problems or needs; do effective counseling or referrals to meet these needs.
- Assists other departments within the facility when requested, and when it will benefit the residents and / or help the facility operate smoothly.
- Is an advocate for the resident and his / her rights, helping the resident in communicating their needs, wants, and problems to the appropriate departments and agencies.
- Plans and organizes family council meetings.
Job Requirements
Social Services Designee Certificate.
Physical Demands :
Ability to assist residents on and off bus, van or car, and may be required to move or arrange furniture for activities and / or climb stoop, bend, kneel, push and reach to carry out activities.
Sufficient mobility and strength to move freely through the building and to assist, while involved in activities or transportations.
Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distant vision and peripheral vision.
Ability to remain calm under stress.
Able to carry out essential functions of this job (with or without reasonable accommodation) without posing specific, current risk of substantial harm to health and safety of self and / or others.
Minimum Qualifications :
Must pass background screen and drug screen.
Demonstrated ability to plan, organize and communicate appropriate activities that promote participation and enthusiasm among the residents.
Demonstrates ability to prioritize tasks / responsibilities and complete duties / projects within the time allotted. Use effective time management skills.
Education and / or Experience :
Experience working in a group setting with elders is preferred.
High School diploma or equivalent required.
Associate or bachelor’s degree in human service or recreation therapy preferred.
Working knowledge of personal computer and software applications used in job functions.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations :
CNA license required.
Licensed or registered, if applicable, by the state.
Eligibility for state certification as an activity director preferred.
Valid state Driver’s License or Chauffeur’s license as required by property and / or state.
First Aid Certification desired.
