Job Description

The purpose of this role is to support the company’s Architectural History Group with the preparation and completion of architectural inventories and other historic preservation projects that require the identification, evaluation, and assessment of historic resources. Projects may be located nationwide; however, it is anticipated that most project work will be in the U.S. Southwest, Great Basin region, and/or California. Below is a list of duties for this position.


Duties:

  • Develop, direct, and participate in architectural inventories and/or surveys involving the documentation of historic resources.
  • Perform archival research at federal, state, tribal, and private repositories.
  • Prepare, review, and/or edit historic preservation documents, including reconnaissance- and intensive-level architectural surveys; historic building assessments and structure reports; National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) documentation (e.g., registration forms and Multiple Property Documentation Forms, and determinations of eligibility); Historic American Engineering Record (HAER)/Historic American Building Survey (HABS)/Historic American Landscape Survey (HALS) documentation; cultural landscape documentation; historic context studies; and treatment documents.
  • Prepare NRHP and local register significance evaluations and consider, document, and make recommendations regarding findings of project effect and appropriate means of avoidance, minimization, and/or mitigation.
  • Coordinate preparation of report figures with GIS staff.
  • Develop and adhere to project scopes and budgets.
  • Assist with marketing and business development.
  • Understand and assist clients with state, federal, and tribal cultural resources compliance.
  • Work independently and resolve project challenges with minimal supervision.
  • Communicate effectively and work closely with fellow employees, clients, vendors, and the public.
  • Perform travel that may include overnight and/or out-of-state stays for extended periods of time.


Job Qualifications (Education, Experience, and Skills):

  • Minimum Education: Master’s degree in architectural history, historic preservation, history, public history, or a closely related field.
  • Minimum of eight (8) years of experience in Cultural Resource Management (CRM) and a minimum of two (2) years of experience supervising and managing projects.
  • Thorough understanding of Southwest, California, and/or Great Basin history and common architectural styles and types.
  • Proficient understanding of state and federal historic preservation laws and regulations, particularly Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) and Section 4(f) of the U.S. Department of Transportation Act
  • Familiarity with National Park Service historic preservation standards and guidelines, preservation briefs, and National Register bulletins
  • Experience preparing and implementing research designs and work plans that meet state and federal standards and guidelines.
  • Successful management and completion of projects on time and within budget.
  • Experience using GPS and GIS applications (Tablet, ArcGIS Pro).
  • Able to work well independently as well as in a team environment.
  • Possess strong attention to detail and excellent recordkeeping skills.
  • Ability to perform fieldwork in adverse conditions (e.g., rugged terrain, remote locations, hot and cold temperatures, dense vegetation) and carry up to 25 pounds of equipment.
  • Possess strong written and verbal communication skills, with demonstrated ability to communicate complex information to a wide variety of audiences.
  • Valid Driver's License, with the ability to maintain insurability under the company's insurance carrier

Working Conditions and Environment:

This position will require general supervision and will have to use independent judgment within established guidelines. Generally uses the advanced knowledge to analyze, interpret, or make deductions from varying facts or circumstances. Will need the ability to establish rapport quickly with others working on the same project, and be able to promote a positive team environment. Working knowledge of dealing with a diverse population while using tact, diplomacy, and respect.
