Job Description

The Biologist II position typically entails a mid-level biologist possessing a general knowledge and experience with the assessment of impacts from various development projects on flora, fauna, and the natural environments in California. The ideal candidate can lead a small project team of biologists to conduct field assessments independently. This role will be a key link between entry level biologists and senior biologists. Essential qualifications for this position include beyond basic understanding of the natural systems of California, including various habitat types, and vegetation communities. Desirable qualification includes a sound knowledge of California regulatory agencies and their regulatory oversight of natural resources.

Duties :

Conduct (pre-construction) wildlife / plant habitat assessments and surveys (including jurisdictional waters & wetlands).
Monitor construction activities and ensure compliance with applicable permit conditions
Record and identify flora and flora.
Collect, compile, and analyze biological data collected in the field and / or from desktop research.
Under the guidance of a Senior Biologist, prepare biological sections of various technical documents (such as CEQA and NEPA documents), biological assessments / evaluations reports, and other types of survey reports related to biological resources.
Under the guidance of a Senior Biologist, prepare various plans such as mitigation plans, habitat restoration plans, habitat conservation plan
Prepare Clean Water Act Section 404 permit, Section 401 water quality certification, and Section 1602 Streambed permit applications.
Develop appropriate and feasible mitigation measures.
Collect, compile, and analyze geospatial data using GPS equipment and GIS software.
Other duties as assigned.

Job Qualifications (Education, Experience, and Skills) :

Minimum Education : Minimum Education : Bachelor’s degree in wildlife biology, botany, conservation biology, ecology, natural resources, or a closely related field

Minimum of three (3) years of experience

Field experience in the Southwestern US with native threatened / endangered wildlife or plant species

Experience preparing environmental regulatory compliance documents such as biological assessments / evaluations are preferred

Experience with Clean Water Action Section 404 / 401 compliance and permitting is preferred.

Experience with the California Department of Fish and Game Section 1602 Streambed Alteration agreement is preferred.

California linear project experience (Utility / Transmission Line, Roadways, etc., is preferred

References regarding experience will be required.

Knowledge of California flora and fauna and natural communities of California.

Knowledge of California regulatory agencies with oversight of natural resources.

General understanding of the federal Endangered Species Act, California Endangered Species Act, Clean Water Act and National Environmental Policy Act.

Strong written and oral communication skills.

General computer hardware and software skills.

Proficiency with GIS software and GPS equipment is preferred.

Ability to work closely with fellow employees and clients.

Ability to work independently on one’s own initiative as well as a member of a diverse team.

Ability to foster a positive work environment and organize and handle multiple assignments.

Training and experience with burrowing owl surveys and species listed by the Federal Endangered Species Act is preferred.

Ability to pass a background check.

Valid driver's license, with the ability to maintain insurability under the company's insurance carrier

Other Requirements :

Ability to work in harsh outdoor conditions (heat, cold, dust, wind, and rough terrain).

Ability to climb stairs without assistance.

Ability to lift 30 pounds and carry a 30-pound backpack for at least 1 hour.

Ability to use a computer while sitting for extended periods, daily.

Ability to travel with overnight stays for extended periods.
