AZTEC is seeking qualified Project Directors to join our Cultural Resources Group based in Phoenix and Tucson, Arizona.

Job Description

The purpose of this role is to develop, direct, and complete all types of archaeological projects (survey, monitoring, testing, and data recovery). Projects may be located in the Southwest and / or Great Basin regions. Below is a list of duties for this position.

Duties :

  • Develop, direct, and participate in all types of archaeological investigations (testing, data recovery, monitoring, survey, and field documentation)
  • Assist and instruct other staff in proper field, research, and reporting methods
  • Prepare, review, and edit technical reports documenting and synthesizing the results of research and field and lab work
  • Evaluate and make recommendations regarding the NRHP eligibility of archaeological sites, findings of project effects upon cultural resources, and appropriate means of avoidance, minimization, and / or mitigation
  • Prepare graphics for reports using ArcGIS Pro or coordinate graphic preparation with GIS staff
  • Develop, implement, and oversee research designs and work plans
  • Develop and adhere to project scopes and budgets
  • Manage and track budgets and schedules
  • Understand and assist clients with state, federal, and tribal cultural resources compliance
  • Coordinate with sub-consultants, vendors, and permitting agencies
  • Work independently and resolve project challenges with minimal supervision
  • Supervise junior staff
  • Perform archaeological research and conduct site file searches at federal, state, tribal, and private repositories
  • Use a tablet, compass, trowel, shovel, pick, hula hoe, and screen
  • Communicate effectively and work closely with fellow employees, clients, vendors, and the public
  • Perform travel that may include overnight and / or out-of-state stays for extended periods of time

Job Qualifications (Education, Experience, and Skills) :

  • Minimum Education : Bachelor’s degree in anthropology, archaeology, or closely related field; MA or MS in anthropology, archaeology, or a closely related field preferred
  • Minimum of seven (7) years of experience in Cultural Resource Management (CRM) and a minimum of two (2) years of experience supervising and managing projects, junior staff, and preparing technical reports
  • Experience successfully directing all types and phases of cultural resource investigations (survey, testing, data recovery and monitoring)
  • Ability to be permitted as a Project Director by the Arizona State Museum required; ability to qualify at a supervisory level for additional state and federal archaeological permits in AZ, NV, and / or UT preferred
  • Thorough understanding of Southwest and / or Great Basin prehistory and / or history, archaeological method and theory, and applicable federal and state cultural resource management / historic preservation laws
  • Advanced technical expertise in a field such as bioarcheology, flaked stone analysis, ground stone analysis, or zooarchaeology preferred
  • Experience preparing research designs, work plans, and technical reports that meet state and federal standards and guidelines
  • Successful management and completion of projects on time and within budget
  • Experience using GPS and GIS applications (Tablet, ArcGIS Pro)
  • Experience in and ability to generate, organize, and maintain accurate field records that meet state and federal standards and guidelines
  • Valid Driver's License, with the ability to maintain insurability under the company's insurance carrier

  • Working Conditions and Environment :

    This position will require general supervision and will have to use independent judgment within established guidelines. Generally, uses advanced knowledge to analyze, interpret, or make deductions from varying facts or circumstances. Will need the ability to establish rapport quickly with others working on the same project, and be able to promote a positive team environment. Working knowledge of dealing with a diverse population while using tact, diplomacy, and respect.
