The Position
The Chief Medical Officer (CMO) will be a dynamic and engaging leader and exceptional provider, serving as a vital resource for staff, providers, and patients. The CMO will be responsible for overseeing all clinical operations, ensuring the highest standards of care, and driving strategic initiatives to enhance Block Island Health Services.
Reporting to the CEO, the CMO will oversee all clinical staff, and will provide and support comprehensive quality care throughout the facility.
The CMO will participate in education initiatives in partnership with Brown University Medical School, including the guidance of medical students. Additionally, this leader will participate in the teaching of both Family Medicine residents from Lifespan and Care New England.
Ideal leaders will bring extensive knowledge pertaining to community and / or rural healthcare, allowing them to oversee our Federal Rural Health accreditation requirements including reviewing quarterly Nurse Practitioner notes, quality and efficiency initiatives, and the development and implementation of policies and procedures when applicable.
This leader will also provide after-hour coverage and must be dependable to respond timely to emergency situations, patient telephone calls, and be prepared to provide after-hour treatment if necessary. After hour coverage will be split amongst all providers.
Ideal candidates will be charismatic, hands-on strategic thinkers with extensive experience in community-based and / or rural healthcare organizations. A strong focus on patient-centered care and population health is vital.
Requirements
MD and / or DO is required.
Board Certified in Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, or Emergency Medicine is required.
The Organization
Founded in 1989, Block Island Health Services (BIHS) is a Rural Health Clinic, a teaching site of Brown University Warren Alpert School of Medicine, provides community health care by integrating care through in-house providers, partnerships with specialists, and through the mainland referral network.
BIHS is home to physician offices, four primary care examination rooms, two urgent care treatment rooms, a laboratory, and an x-ray suite. Additionally, there are two dental offices, and consultation and treatment suites used for behavioral health, physical therapy, chiropractic, massage, and acupuncture therapy.
The medical team at Block Island consists of the CMO / Family Medicine Physician, two Advanced Practice Registered Nurses of Family Medicine, and Registered Nurses who provide primary, urgent, and emergent care services to patients of all ages.
BIHS is proud to partner not only with Brown University Alpert School of Medicine, but also the Block Island Volunteer Rescue Squad, Interstate Navigation, The US Coast Guard, New England Airlines, and the regional helicopter and ambulance services. BIHS hosts a Rural Medicine Elective that is open to Family and Emergency Medicine Residents, medical students, physician assistant students, and nurse practitioner students.
The Community
New Shoreham, Rhode Island, was incorporated in 1672 as the only town on the island of Block Island. New Shoreham is seven miles long and three miles wide (9.5 square miles), and is 12 miles from the Rhode Island coastline.
New Shoreham is home to over 350 freshwater ponds, 28 miles of trails, and the Block Island School District.
Block Island is a dynamic community of ~1,200 year round residents, and a tourist and seasonal resident destination whose population can surge to ~40,000 on a summer day.
