Land Management Technician
The Land Management Technician position provides a unique seasonal employment opportunity in the Natural Resources field with a young and energetic company. Our specialized services and expertise allow landowners to achieve their land management goals; whether its increasing grass production for an equine facility, controlling noxious weeds on native pastureland, removing invasive woody species in riparian habitat, or creating land management plans for communities that contain a shared open space, Back 40 is committed to providing the full scope of work needed and forming long-term relationships with clients.
The Technician role will help accomplish a variety of field work tasks, including but not limited to: herbicide applications using a backpack or UTV sprayer, weed whacking, mowing with a riding mower or a tractor-mounted brush hog, using various hand tools, broadcasting and raking in seed, helping to operate a hydroseed machine, operating a tractor with mounted drill seeder, cutting down small trees/shrubs and hand-dragging material to a staging area, light pruning tasks, chipping woody debris into a dump trailer, and planting trees/shrubs. Candidates with experience and qualifications in the following areas will be given preference:
- A valid driver’s license.
- Experience driving a truck/trailer.
- Experience operating an ATV or a side-by-side (UTV).
- Small engine repair and/or a general mechanical aptitude.
- A background in plant identification.
- Mental toughness – not afraid to spend long days working alone in the heat or cold doing manual labor.
- Physical fitness – ability to hike up to a mile over uneven terrain carrying a 35-pound backpack, lift 25 pounds to head height, lift and carry 40 pounds over short distances, occasionally lift 60 pounds off of the ground, hand/forearm strength to squeeze a spray gun all day, and ability to work on your feet all day using a chainsaw and hand dragging tree limbs.
- Ability to follow written instructions and compare work orders to maps generated for work sites. Must be able to use a map and basic GPS software on smartphone. Need to submit complete work notes daily. Must demonstrate clear and effective written and verbal communication, as some formal written reports and phone calls to clients will be necessary.
- Possess a degree or be working towards one in a natural resource or agricultural – related field.
Starting pay: $17.00/hour - $21.00/hour DOE
Full time / seasonal position
This position is anticipated to be filled from mid-August to the end of December in 2024. This position will require on average 40 hours of work per week, but a part time schedule opportunity is available for students currently enrolled in classes. Work hours are subject to change based on weather conditions.
The employee will be encouraged to participate in educational opportunities related to work and earn certifications in herbicide applications, chainsaw operation, etc. For the right candidate, work beyond the end of December will be available (although with limited hours). Ideally the candidate will return in 2025 to a full-time position.
