About the Department:
The People & Culture Team (P&C) is a dynamic and experienced group of professionals dedicated to fostering a positive and productive work environment. With decades of collective knowledge, the team excels in collaboration and innovation, ensuring that the organization's culture thrives. Currently, the department is comprised of two teams:
- Talent Development: Responsible for the employee lifecycle from recruiting to hiring, onboarding, employee & manager training, professional development, performance reviews, culture, change management, events and companywide communication.
- People Operations: Responsible for the seamless execution of traditional HR processes, benefits, compliance, payroll and performance management.

About The Role:
The People & Culture Intern will play a key role in supporting the ongoing development of our Learning Management System, contributing to the enhancement of the employee learning experience at Backroads. The main responsibility of this role involves collaborating with departments across Backroads to support the development and implementation of new training programs. You will learn how to build training programs in our HRIS system under the guidance of our P&C Learning Administrators. You will regularly liaise with Learning Partners from multiple departments to understand training needs, gather materials, and ensure program alignment. This role requires someone who is organized, detail oriented, proactive, eager to learn, and an amazing communicator with a passion for travel and learning about Talent Development.
What You’ll be Doing:
- You will have the opportunity to work closely with our Learning Administrators in P&C and Learning Partners throughout the company to support the development of our Learning Management System.
- You will gain valuable experience working within our Human Resources Information System (HRIS), Workday - primarily building training programs.
- You will be responsible for escalating concerns and system issues to the Learning Administrator in a timely manner.
- You’ll collaborate with other departments daily to ensure training materials are up to date and delivered on time.
- You’ll support our team by preparing and setting up meetings, taking notes during discussions, and following up on action items to keep everything on track.
- You’ll work to update SharePoint sites and systems to educate our employees about new learning resources.
- You will liaise with our Videographer to ensure new content is properly uploaded to corresponding training programs.
What You’ll Need to Be Successful:
- Currently enrolled at an accredited university or college.
- Ability to grasp new concepts and systems quickly and efficiently.
- Strong attention to detail and time management skills.
- Proactive mindset with the ability to anticipate needs and take initiative.
- Eagerness to learn, with a drive to explore new ideas.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Ability to think critically and confidently bring questions to the table.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, PowerPoint, Word).
- Passion for travel and the Backroads' mission.
Work Environment:
- On-site, Berkeley, CA
- Summer internship from early May - mid August
