The Bainbridge Island Metropolitan Park & Recreation District invites applicants to apply for an internship in the field of Fitness. The Bainbridge Island Metro Park & Recreation District Fitness department seeks to engage our community in life-long wellness. The Fitness department provides quality recreational programs, services, and facilities that maximize opportunities individual and community health and wellness.
The Fitness Program Intern will work directly with the Fitness Program Coordinator to support and manage the delivery of recreational programs including, but not limited to, Group Fitness, Personal Training, custom Fitness, and Wellness programs and events within the Park District. This position will support programming and opportunities that cultivate a quality, inclusive, safe, and diverse environment.
This role provides an opportunity to gain valuable professional experience in program management, leadership, and operations in a parks and recreation setting. The selected candidate will experience recreation programming through an environment that is hands-on and fast paced with a professional development approach. In addition, the intern will also have other education opportunities within the District and will be encouraged to take part in recreation manager meetings, board meetings, training and other District projects of interest.

On Island housing and a monthly stipend are provided. Housing includes free rent, paid utilities, and internet provided. Interns will have free use of the Recreation Center and Aquatic Center and are eligible for 50% off selected District classes.

- Managing the daily operating tasks for the Fitness program (Group Fitness, Personal Training, and Small Group Personal Training).
- Collaborate on the development and delivery of fitness and wellness programs, including fitness challenges, workshops, and special events.
- Working with staff and volunteers in areas such as training & development, staff meetings, and overall staff management.
- Input class schedule, program offerings, and special events in online scheduling software.
- Assist with customer service, marketing and promotions to foster participant engagement and inclusion.
- Develop and implement strategies to increase engagement in fitness programs.
- Assist with risk management and ensure safety protocols are followed during all fitness activities.
- Work as a contributing member of the fitness program staff towards the accomplishment of program and departmental objectives.
- Participate in department staff meetings, committee assignments, and department-wide programs.
- Perform additional duties as requested by supervisor or as necessary by business demands.
- Experience with instructing group fitness classes, strength and conditioning classes, personal training, health and wellness coaching, or another related field.
- Ability to balance multiple tasks, work on an individual level and in a team setting and demonstrate excellent communication skills.
- Strong professionalism, organizational and leadership skills.
- Knowledge of fitness industry trends and best practices.
- Currently enrolled at an institution of higher education.
- Pursuing a bachelor’s degree in exercise science, kinesiology, health education, or related field.
- Requires CPR, AED and First Aid certification or ability to obtain within the first 30 days.
- Must pass criminal background check.

- Demonstrate good leadership, sound judgment and the ability to adapt to new situations.
- Ability to work harmoniously in a group and to interact with participants of all ages in a positive and courteous manner.
- Ability to work safely.
- Experience with fitness programming, personal training, or group fitness.
- Holds nationally accredited group fitness or personal training certification.
- Average of 40 hours/week, dates are approximate and will run from June through August.
- Flexible schedule that permits evening and weekend facility supervision.
- Requires work be performed in-person, onsite, and at designated District locations.
