Description
Under general supervision, plans, formulates and implements a variety of community recreational programs. Will provide leadership, direction and instructions to other employees involved in the program.
Examples of Duties
- Assigns schedules and supervises the work of Recreation Program Leads, Instructors, Assistants and Volunteers.
- Takes the lead or assists Program Manager in program development, coordination and planning.
- Maintain regular and timely attendance.
- Understand and follow all District policies and procedures.
- Maintains records and prepares reports.
- Ability to drive District vehicles if necessary.
- May teach, coach, or lead programs.
- Prepares lesson plans for camps and classes.
- Inspects program equipment and facilities for safety hazards and recommends or takes corrective action.
- Performs other related work as required.
- With the Program Managers' supervision, may order supplies and equipment.
- Attend training and staff meetings as assigned.
- Prepare for and clean up after each day of classes.
- Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
- Promote Bainbridge Island Metro Parks & Recreation sailing activities and programs, serve as sailing ambassador to the community, support needs / trends, and innovative new opportunities.
- Maintain required certifications such as First Aid / CPR / AED, SafeSport, and US Sailing Small Boat Level 1 . Sailing Coordinator must have WA Boater Ed Card and extensive powerboat driving experience in addition to dinghy sailing experience. US Sailing Level 1- 3 certifications preferred.
- Continually represent the District in a professional manner.
- Work closely with Outdoor Programs Manager regarding programming needs, problems and solutions, budgeting and staffing.
- Work closely with the District mechanic and maintenance specialist to ensure the safe use, maintenance, transport, storage, and replacement of dinghy fleets, motorboats, their equipment, and facilities.
- Coordinate engine and trailer servicing with the District's Mechanic according to annual schedules and issues when they arise.
- Complete off-season storage preparation including fresh-water rinsing, inspection, securing, and winterization.
- Seek quotes when required for repairs and maintenance outside of Park & Rec's capabilities and routines; trailer boats to / from service locations as needed.
- Submit activity catalog descriptions and revisions for sailing classes and camps along with promotional photos.
- Work with the Outdoor Program Manager to recruit staff and volunteers for classes and camps, inform candidates of necessary training, application process, schedule interviews, and lead trainings.
- Mentor instructors and teach classes as needed
- Promptly reply to emails and correspondence using Park & Rec email and send camp / class welcome email templates to participants unless otherwise assigned.
- Refill gas cans and portable tanks with ethanol-free gas; inform the Outdoor Program Manager of any staff that needs to be added to the approved vendor list. Submit all receipts to Outdoor Programs Manager.
- Ensure classes, dinghies, and equipment do not interfere with partner organization's use of shared space assuming advanced notification of special events.
- Communicate and coordinate use of doublehanded dinghies, motorboats, equipment, trailers, Eagle Harbor float, and Meigs boat barn with Friends of Bainbridge Island High School Sailing.
- Communicate and coordinate loan of boats and equipment to Port Madison Yacht Club as needed for their annual Sail School and JAM youth regatta.
- Promote BIHS sailing team and PMYC Jr. sailing as per cooperative agreements to help ensure the recruitment of staff for programming.

Work Environment and Physical Effort
This is a non-smoking workplace. Depending on the specific program, work is performed both indoors and outdoors using Park District, public or private facilities or in the water or recreational areas. Though most programs operate during the day, a few programs meet in the evenings and / or overnight. Programs and trips may be out of reach of cell phone coverage.
