Job Overview:
We’re looking for a motivated and skilled Fire Test Lab Technician to join our fire testing lab. This hands-on role is ideal for someone with a construction or firestop background who’s ready to apply their expertise in a technical, team-driven environment. You'll help build and test fire-rated assemblies, support engineers, and take part in critical fire endurance testing that contributes to safer buildings.
Technician II responsibilities include operating and maintaining specialized lab equipment (furnace, afterburner, scrubber), troubleshooting failed tests, and reviewing firestop systems using resources like UL Product iQ and industry standards.

Key Responsibilities
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to a warehouse and laboratory environment. The noise level in the work environment can be very loud in the lab with testing equipment running as well as in the warehouse with heavy equipment running.This includes variable outside conditions such as extreme heat or cold. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to use hands and fingers to type or dial, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl, and reach with hands and arms.
The employee must be able to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. This position requires computer use. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

Key Responsibilities
- Interpret UL test standards, life safety drawings, and blueprints
- Install firestop systems using drywall, mineral wool, sealants, insulation, and metal framing
- Construct test assemblies for fire-rated walls, joints, and penetrations
- Measure, cut, and assemble materials with hand and power tools
- Operate and maintain furnaces, afterburners, and scrubber systems
- Perform preventive maintenance and assist in calibration of lab systems
- Set up, run, and disassemble fire resistance tests per lab protocols
- Accurately document build details, materials, and observations
- Use UL Product iQ and internal documentation to research test standards
- Support scheduling and planning of test operations
- Troubleshoot test failures and support continuous improvement efforts
- Promote a culture of lab safety, efficiency, and quality craftsmanship
- Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills
- Works well independently and in team settings
- Clear communicator with solid organizational habits
- Passionate about craftsmanship and process improvement
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Minimum 2 or more years’ experience in fire protection, construction, or testing environments a plus
- Familiarity with carpentry, drywall, insulation, or firestop installation
- Comfortable using construction tools and following safety best practices
- Able to read tape measures, blueprints, and technical schematics
- Strong mechanical aptitude and attention to detail
- Capable of lifting 25 lbs regularly and 50 lbs occasionally
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook)
- Ability to learn and use UL Product iQ, ICC standards, and internal tools
