Salary will be commensurate with experience and qualifications.Department of Public SafetyLaw Enforcement OfficerPosition Summary: We are looking for individuals with a minimum of 3 years of law enforcement experience to join the Law Enforcement Division of the Public Safety Department. This position's primary focus is in the area of law enforcement, but it is also responsible for performing fire suppression duties. Successful candidates will be required to attend fire certification training, provided by the Village, to supplement their BLET certification.Due to the unique circumstance of being on an island, the Village of Bald Head Island combines emergency services under the Public Safety Department; the technical title for this position is Public Safety Officer – Law Enforcement Division. Functionally, this position operates as a police officer with the added operation of fire suppression. Distinguishing Features of the ClassAn employee in this class participates in the operations of general law enforcement duties such as preventing, detecting, and investigating disturbances and crime. Work involves responding to calls and patrolling the Village in various motorized and non-motorized apparatus and on foot. Employees also participate in pre-incident planning, maintenance of records, and training programs. An employee will also participate in fire suppression, fire education, and other incident response operations. Employees must exercise good judgment, initiative and calm control when performing duties. Work involves frequent public contact which requires good communication skills, tact, and decisiveness. Employees typically work a 24.5-hour shift and participate as part of a team during call responses. Work requires that the employee stay abreast of state-of-the-art law enforcement and fire suppression procedures, techniques, and equipment. The employee is subject to the hazards associated with incident response work. Work is performed under regular supervision.General Overview of Duties and ResponsibilitiesPatrols streets, area waters and beach in motorized vehicles, non-motorized apparatus and on foot; checks doors and windows; examines premises of unoccupied residences or buildings; detects unusual conditions; reports dangerous or defective streets, sidewalks, or other hazardous conditions; may maintain surveillance and observation for missing persons, or suspects.Responds to calls for assistance, complaints, suspicious activity, domestic disputes, loud and disruptive behavior; completes calls by determining true nature of the situation and taking whatever legal or persuasive action is warranted.Investigates traffic accidents; conducts special traffic checkpoints to enforce alcohol, speed, or other laws; operates intoxilizer equipment.Performs investigations of accidents or possible crimes through observations, questioning witnesses, and gathering physical evidence; performs investigative tasks, arrests and processes criminal suspects; presents findings in court.Issues citations for violation of traffic regulations, serves warrants, apprehends, and processes criminal suspects and transports to magistrate and/or County detention facilities.Participates in incident response including firefighting operations, operation of fire apparatus and other equipment as required.Participates in remediation activities of hazardous materials.Drives fire apparatus to incident scenes; properly places apparatus, ensures proper operation, issues equipment and monitors radio traffic for necessary response; returns apparatus and related equipment to service after incident response.Participates in training, pre-planning, education and prevention programs.Maintains equipment and weapons.Gives information and directions to visitors and the public; educates public on the prevention and response of police, fire, medical and rescue related situations, and advises on laws and local ordinances.Performs additional duties as assigned.Desirable Experience and EducationGraduation from high school or equivalency supplemented by training courses in law enforcement or emergency management and 3-5 years of experience working as a law enforcement officer, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.Special RequirementsPossession a valid Class B North Carolina Driver's license.Basic Law Enforcement Training Certificate.Minimum of 3 years of previous law enforcement experience.Ability to obtain Firefighter & Hazmat certifications.Ability to obtain NIMS 100, 200, and 700 certificates.Administering the ClassBased on the law coverage needed on the Island, there may be times when the Village will recruit individuals who have 3-5 years of law enforcement experience. These individuals will be required to become certified in Fire.
