Job Title – Mechanic I

Supervised by / Reports to :   Mechanic II, Bus Shop Foreman, Transportation Coordinator and Bus Shop Foreman

FLSA Status :   Non-exempt

Job Goal :

To provide excellent vehicle maintenance services for all Baldwin County School System buses and other vehicles to ensure safe and efficient transportation for students and employees.

To assist transportation personnel in the diagnosis, prevention, and correction of transportation problems or unsafe conditions.

To assist with the effective management of school system vehicles, fiscal and material resources, and transportation personnel.

Qualifications :

1. Minimum of five (5) years heavy-duty fleet mechanic’s experience.

2. Maintain a current Department of Transportation (DOT) physical as required by Board policy.

3. Possess and maintain a valid Alabama bus driver certificate and commercial driver’s license (CDL).

4. Ability to obtain Alabama School Bus Mechanic certification.

5. Ability to meet suitability criteria for employment and / or certification / licensure under the Alabama Child Protection Act of 1999 and Act No. 2002-457.

6. Competent written and verbal communication skills.

7. Ability to operate and maintain needed tools and diagnostic equipment.

8. Ability to diagnose mechanical problems, to implement preventive maintenance programs, and to follow safety and recommended rules for efficient shop operations.

9. Ability to follow safety and recommended rules for efficient shop operations.

10. Possess and maintain an acceptable motor vehicle record including no DUI convictions.

11. Possess successful drug screening results and be subject to and pass subsequent drug screening tests.

12. Physical strength and agility to lift and carry objects weighing up to 50 pounds.

13. Ability to exert up to 75 pounds of force.

14. Ability, agility and stamina to engage in prolonged sitting or standing, stooping, kneeling, crawling, bending, turning and reaching.

15. Ability and willingness to work indoors and outdoors year-round in noisy, crowded environments, and inclement weather.

16. Ability and willingness to work after hours, weekends, or holidays when necessary.

17. Ability to be punctual and in regular attendance.

18. Such alternatives qualifications as listed as the Board may require.

Performance Responsibilities and Essential Functions :

1. Performs monthly safety inspection on buses as required by the State of Alabama.

2. Performs maintenance and body repair on all vehicles and equipment owned by the Baldwin County Board of Education.

3. Assist in developing written maintenance records for all vehicles owned by the school system.

4. Performs routine maintenance and service on vehicles and equipment, including video systems, at regularly- scheduled intervals.

5. Maintains service bay in a clean, neat and safe manner.

6. Keep service truck washed as needed and serviced at intervals as needed as established by the transportation department.

7. Maintains an accurate inventory of supplies and equipment assigned to service truck.

8. Properly uses and maintains responsibility for tools, equipment, and material resources of the school system.

9. Request supplies and equipment needed to carry out duties and assigned projects.

10. Performs road call duty as needed.

11. Responds promptly to call out in emergency situations.

12. Performs all mechanical maintenance services with priority on student and employee safety; removes from service any bus or other vehicle that is unsafe to operate.

13. Returns buses or other vehicles to active service only after identified maintenance problems have been corrected.

14. Engages in work related training to increase knowledge and skills as directed and / or for advancement.

15. Performs duties in a courteous, professional manner.

16. Maintains appropriate confidentiality regarding school / workplace matters.

17. Demonstrates initiative in identifying potential problems and / or opportunities for improvement in areas of responsibility.

18. Reports potential problems, unusual events, or work irregularities to appropriate administrative or supervisory personnel.

19. Responds to inquiries, requests, constructive feedback, concerns and / or complaints in a timely and positive manner.

20. Maintains and submits reports, records, and correspondence in a timely and accurate manner.

21. Adheres to school system rules, administrative procedures, local Board policies, and state, federal, and local regulations.

22. Reports absences and takes leave in accordance with Board policies and procedures.

23. Performs other job-related duties as assigned by Supervisor(s).

Terms of Employment :   Twelve month position in accordance with the Board’s salary schedule.

Evaluation :   Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with the provisions of the Baldwin County Board of Education policy for classified personnel evaluation.
