Performs a variety of unskilled and semi-skilled tasks to maintain the Sheriff's Office grounds, including the installation, renovation and maintenance of landscaped areas (parking lots, fences, and sidewalks). The position requires physical labor (mowing, edging, weeding, pruning) and administrative skills related to maintaining work orders, obtaining materials, and maintaining supplies. An employee in this position may be responsible for security and supervision of inmate work crews. Performs other related duties in the Maintenance Division as assigned.
Successful applicants must pass a criminal background check and will be subject to a pre-employment drug screen.

WORKING CONDITIONS
Landscape Technician I position involve exposure to and require the employee to function in the presence of the following:
- Inclement weather, to include extreme heat/cold, rain, etc.
- Light conditions associated with day and night
- Travel throughout the county to various Sheriff's Office locations
- Working inside the Baldwin County Corrections Center and Sheriff Offices buildings as needed.
- Works with and in-close proximity to inmates
- Works with and applies pesticides, fertilizers, other chemicals.
- Mows and maintains lawn areas.
- Maintains sprinkler systems and assist in the repair and installation of sprinkler lines and heads.
- Performs routine maintenance of lawn and power equipment.
- Plants grass, trees, shrubs, flowers; installs sod; installs erosion control materials and/or landscape materials such as rock, mulch, dirt.
- Applies chemicals such as fertilizer, pest control, weed control throughout the grounds.
- Maintains and adjusts specialized landscaping care equipment and tools including electric motors, pumps, sprinklers, lawn mowers, washers and other equipment as needed.
- Operates zero turn mowers, trucks, trimmers, weed-eaters, hedge clippers, chain saws, leaf blowers and other equipment.
- Maintains current skills and knowledge in the proper and safe techniques of building and grounds maintenance operations.
- Performs custodial and other maintenance work as assigned including: changing light bulbs, painting, sweeping, vacuuming, mopping, power washing, emptying trash cans, liter control, cleaning gutters.
- Hauls, stores, and disposes various materials and items as needed (lawn debris, files, furniture)
- Opens, closes, locks and unlocks facilities needed.
- Performs clerical work relating to routine reports, evaluations, inventory, and work orders.
- Performs physical activities that require considerable use of one's arms and legs and moving the whole body, such as climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, stooping, and handling of materials.
- Using hands and arms in handling, installing, positioning and moving materials, and manipulating things.
NON-ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

- Knowledge of the structure and content of the English language including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition and grammar, arithmetic and modern office practices and procedures
- Knowledge of computer programs, to include operation of Microsoft Office) and various other office equipment including phones, faxes, scanners, printers and copiers
- Ability to perform routine maintenance on equipment and determining when and what kind of maintenance is needed.
- Ability to watch gauges, dials, or other indicators to make sure a machine is working properly.
- Ability to make precisely coordinated movements of the fingers of one or both hands to grasp, manipulate, or assemble very small objects.
