Ballard Community School District, a district with approximately 1700 students located minutes from Ames and the Des Moines metro, has a assistant principal position available for the 2025-2026 school year. Administrative positions have 260-day contracts.

Basic Function: The Assistant Principal will work closely with the principal, school personnel, and students to create conditions for success for all students and build and maintain a positive, safe school climate.

  • Manage and enforce school behavioral expectations, including attendance.
  • Manage student supervision before, during, and after the school day as well as extra-curricular events.
  • Confer with students, parents, and teachers regarding student-related policies.
  • Assist staff with the creation and alignment of classroom student behavioral expectations and classroom management plans.
  • Serve as a resource to staff regarding student management issues.
  • Collaborate with staff, administrators, and parents through the response to the intervention process.
  • Assist in the planning, developing, and implementation of student behavior plans.
  • Confer with students and administer appropriate consequences.
  • Openly communicate with staff and parents/guardians regarding student behavior.
  • Collaborate with the school counselor and personnel to create and maintain research-based behavioral interventions (ex: mentoring, small groups, check-in-check-out systems, etc) and train faculty and staff in those interventions.
  • Manage the documentation of student behavior through the student management system.
  • Attend appropriate meetings regarding student growth and success (IEP and 504 case conferences, parent meetings, expulsion hearings, etc).
  • Assist in the maintenance of the crisis management plan and school safety requirements.
  • Compile, analyze, and share student discipline data regularly, and use that data to make decisions.
  • Conducts high-quality classroom observations, identifies effective teaching practices, and understands pedagogy that results in improved student learning.
  • Assist with the development of staff members’ professional knowledge, skills, and practice through differentiated opportunities for learning and growth.
  • Assist teachers in selecting yearly professional goals for the improvement of instruction.
  • Assist in the development and administration of school programs consistent with school district goals and objectives.
  • Encourages staff to continue to grow professionally and to experiment with new approaches or strategies to teaching.
  • Assist in coordinating the work of school staff and school district program leaders to develop and implement instructional programs and teaching practices.
  • Use assessment data appropriately to monitor student progress and improve instruction.
  • Ensure district curriculum, instructional models, and assessments are implemented with fidelity.
  • Embodies high expectations for student learning and behavior.
  • Conducts ongoing assessment of student learning, and works with teaching staff to modify instructional methods to fit students' needs, including students with special needs.
  • Involves staff in the evaluation of programs and the planning of new programs.
  • Articulates, advocates, and cultivates core values that enhance high expectations, equity, inclusiveness, and social justice.
  • Ensures that each student and staff member is treated fairly, and respectfully, with an understanding of culture and context in interactions, decision-making, and practice.
  • Promotes a school environment that is safe and conducive to individualized instruction, cooperative curriculum development, and student learning.
  • Encourages parental involvement in students' education and ensures effective communication with students and parents.
  • Ensures that student conduct and attendance conform with the school's standards and school district policies.
  • Acts ethically and professionally in personal conduct, relationships with others, decision-making, stewardship of the school's resources, and all aspects of leadership.
  • Continues to acquire professional knowledge and learn of current developments in the educational field by attending seminars, workshops, or professional meetings, or by conducting research.
  • May supervise instructional staff as assigned.
  • Maintain high integrity and confidentiality in the school operation.
  • Be knowledgeable of and abide by all school board policies, procedures, and other applicable laws.
  • Cooperate with and work in a courteous manner with co-workers and other personnel.
  • Dress appropriately for the position and work required.
  • Demonstrate a positive attitude toward school, students, and job and communicate the same to the community.
  • Accept constructive criticism and suggestions and seek to improve each performance responsibility.
  • Demonstrate organization and professionalism in fulfilling the responsibilities of the job.
  • Greet all students, faculty, staff, and visitors courteously
  • Attend work on a prompt and regular basis.
Specifications/Qualifications:
  • Appropriate Certification
  • Experience and/or training working with administrative and instructional technology
  • Previous teaching experience
  • Ability to work well with others and coordinate team initiatives
  • Strong leadership and communication skills
  • Strong administrative/management and organizational skills
