A vacancy exists in the Police Department, Support Operations Division.


A list of eligible applicants will be established based on the examination as outlined below.


Current and future vacancies occurring in any Office or Department of Baltimore County General Government may be filled from the list of eligible applicants.

Examples of Duties

Under general supervision, performs a variety of office and field, clerical and administrative support duties to assist in conducting routine law enforcement functions.


  • Gathers and maintains records and information on various crimes, including fraud, robbery, telephone misuse, vehicle theft, driving while intoxicated, and spousal assault.
  • Contacts victims, officers, and the public to expand and coordinate information and to provide and investigate leads to assist in the solving of crimes.
  • Performs administrative functions in a precinct or traffic unit, such as answering phones, sending and receiving teletypes, taking police reports, maintaining logs and records, and monitoring and using police radios to provide information and assistance to departmental personnel and the public.
  • Coordinates the work of traffic guards in a region.
  • Receives and handles requests from the public for non-emergency assistance and information, gathers information and completes police reports, answers questions, and provides information and advice to the public.
  • Prepares and sends out teletypes providing information regarding stolen vehicles and other stolen property.
  • Provides assistance to Police Officers in the performance of their duties by directing traffic, assisting with crowd control, special events, and details.
  • Accesses MILES, NCIC, MVA, and other police and criminal justice computer networks in order to review and retrieve information, perform criminal background checks on subjects, and gather and research other information as needed.
  • Relays information for police officers and equipment.
Examples of Other Duties
  • Provides routine office support by answering phones, directing calls and mail, and filing.
  • Collects and compiles technical data and prepares summary statistics.
  • Gives lectures and presentations to police recruits, community and business groups, and other interested parties.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

Qualifications

Possession of a high school diploma or an appropriate equivalent.

Plus

Two years' general clerical experience.

(Additional education may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.)

Preferred Qualification
Work experience in a clerical or administrative function within a Law Enforcement Agency or Public Sector employment.

Age Requirements
Applicants must be at least 18 years of age at the time of appointment.

Character Requirements
All applicants must be of good moral character and emotionally stable, as determined by a comprehensive background investigation and drug test.

Citizenship Requirement
All applicants must be citizens of the United States at the time of appointment.

Licenses and Certificates
Possession of a valid driver's license equivalent to a non-commercial, class C Maryland driver's license may be required for some positions at time of appointment.

Applicants are required to submit proof of license(s), certification(s) and education beyond high school to meet the required and preferred qualifications of the position. Diplomas or transcripts must show the applicant's major field of study. Copies and unofficial transcripts are acceptable.

EXAMINATION PROCEDURE
Applicants will be qualified based on an evaluation of their training and experience, as stated on their application, which includes answers to the supplemental questions. Applicants must state the dates and duties of past and present experience clearly and completely for evaluation purposes.

Conditions of Employment

Persons appointed to this classification may work on either a fixed or rotating shift basis, which may include nights, weekends, holidays, and overtime when scheduled. Persons appointed to this classification must attend selected academic and physical training at the Police Academy, as determined by assignment.

Physical and Environmental Conditions
The work of this classification varies by position. Some positions are essentially sedentary, others involve frequent walking, standing, lifting, climbing, and carrying of equipment. Some positions require the operation of motor vehicles and/or office equipment. Some positions may require the wearing of a uniform. Some positions require exposure to potentially hazardous conditions such as adverse weather and traffic.

Medical Examination and Employment Background Investigation
Applicants selected for employment with Baltimore County must successfully complete a physical examination, drug screening and employment investigation, including, but not limited to criminal background, education certification and fingerprinting checks.

Salary

Annual Salary review - Step increases may be granted on anniversary date based on satisfactory job performance
General Increases - Cost of living increases and adjustments may be granted as legislated.
Longevity Increases - In accordance with the specific pay schedule, a full-time merit or classified employee may receive a longevity increase, equivalent to one step, upon completion of a certain number of years of classified service with the County.
