    JOB TITLE: ROUTING ASSISTANT - OFFICE OF TRANSPORTATION

    REPORTS TO: Senior Operations Supervisor, Office of Transportation

    SCHEDULE: Full Time

    DEFINITION: Performs a variety of administrative and operational duties supporting the transportation of students during the school year and summer months (12-month position). Assists in the development, implementation, and maintenance of bus routes. Provides advice and guidance to school administrators, bus drivers, and others regarding transportation matters. Operates school buses to transport students. Performs other duties as assigned.

    EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:

    Assists in the development and implementation of bus routes to ensure appropriate route planning, bus stop placement, and bus capacity. Analyzes the safety and efficiency of bus routes based upon knowledge, on-site inspection, and/or input from drivers and administrators.

    Assists in assigning students to appropriate bus stops. Works in determining the need for and placement of additional bus stops. Ensures that updated route sheets are in place on buses.

    Provides advice and guidance to school administrators, bus drivers, and others regarding transportation matters. Works with Assistant Principals to implement transportation changes.

    Visits schools and field sites to investigate and resolve transportation related concerns. Serves as a liaison with school administrators regarding transportation. Coordinates with bus drivers, school principals and area transportation supervisors to resolve serious problems.

    Represents the Office of Transportation in meetings and participates in transportation department activities as required. Communicates with school administrators, drivers, parents, attendants, and other school personnel.

    Responds to school bus accidents and breakdowns. Coordinates emergency procedures and notifies appropriate personnel. Provides support to the area dispatcher.

    Serves as a mentor to newly assigned personnel. Advises/recommends personnel training needs to management. Monitors time and mileage reports for accuracy. Prepares reports.

    Operates school buses in compliance with established guidelines as required. Adheres to established schedules to safely pick up, transport, and discharge students and staff. Maintains student discipline on the bus.


    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

    Education, Training and Experience:
    Possession of a high school diploma or an appropriate equivalent, plus three years of experience in the transportation of children.

    Education beyond a high school diploma is preferred.

    Licenses and Certificates:
    Possession of a valid commercial, class B Maryland driver's license or an equivalent is required. (The license may require certain endorsements and/or the absence of certain restrictions.)

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
    Knowledge of the principles and practices of transporting children. Knowledge of the operation of school buses. Knowledge of modern office practices and procedures. Knowledge of personal computers and office software applications.

    Skill in the operation of school buses. Skill in reviewing and preparing reports. Skill in analyzing transportation issues. Skill in reading maps and route sheets. Skill in communicating. Skill in mentoring other employees.

    Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships. Ability to communicate effectively. Ability to maintain confidential information.

    PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:
    Work requires the performance of physical labor in the operation of vehicles and travel throughout the Baltimore Metropolitan area, under a variety of weather and road conditions and topography. Work includes prolonged periods of sitting, lifting students, climbing on and off buses, using foot controls to operate gas and brake pedals, and pushing manual door openers. Work includes the operation of office equipment, including personal computers.

    CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
    Persons appointed to this class are subject to call to duty and may be required to work beyond their normally scheduled hours with little or no advanced notice.

    Persons appointed to this class must be physically qualified to drive a commercial motor vehicle in accordance with Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration regulations and must remain physically qualified to operate such vehicles throughout their employment. Persons holding a commercial driver’s license (CDL) are subject to alcohol and drug testing in accordance with applicable state and federal regulations and Board of Education policy.

    GRADE: Grade 08 on the AFSCME Pay Scale

    SALARY: Hourly rates range from $23.80 - $35.86.

    OTHER COMPENSATION:

    FLSA STATUS: Non-exempt

    This position is eligible for overtime and/or compensatory time under FLSA.

    Pre-Employment Requirements:
    • All persons employed by the Baltimore County Public Schools, regular and temporary, are required to be fingerprinted and have a criminal background investigation (State of Maryland, Senate Bill 315, effective October 1, 1986) completed. The fee charged for fingerprinting is $109. An identification card will be issued which must be shown prior to employment.
    • Anyone offered employment is required to provide proper identification and documentation of eligibility for employment in the US.
    • If you have military experience you will be asked to provide a copy of DD214.
    • Official transcripts for all higher education must be received prior to contract signing.
    • Some positions will require employees to undergo a physical examination and/or drug testing.
    • All newly hired personnel must attend a Badges and Benefits session.
    • Additional job verification will be required for salary credit.
