Position Summary:
Oversees golf course grounds maintenance and facility improvements. Manages full-time and seasonal grounds employees, provides training and assigns tasks. The Superintendent must effectively manage their staff and communicate effectively with the golf operations staff, customers and other Revenue Authority employees. The Superintendent will be expected to accomplish the agreed upon goals and financial performance targets for the facility.
Essential Functions / Responsibilities:
Golf Course Maintenance: The Superintendent is the key person responsible for course and grounds conditions, managing within the budgetary performance standards that have been established. The Superintendent will have strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with an ability to focus on the details of performing the job. The Superintendent will also be an organized and effective manager. Working with the staff, the Superintendent will help to create the vision for the course and Baltimore County Golf Division.
Personnel Management: The Superintendent will be the lead on site staff member for the turfgrass team, adhering to Company policies while also improving employee morale, training practices, hiring, retention, and disciplinary matters. In addition, the Superintendent will direct equipment maintenance staff, establish work schedules, monitor attendance, approve leave requests and bi-weekly payroll submissions.
Budget Administration: The Superintendent will create each year’s operating budget, participate in the system wide seed and chemical purchasing process, recommend capital purchases and help the organization maximize its return on personnel and capital investments.
Business Communication: The Superintendent is expected to be able to effectively communicate with employees, golf operations staff and customers using proper written, verbal and electronic communication methods.
Procedural & Regulatory Compliance: The Superintendent is expected to know and understand how to interpret all applicable local, state and federal regulations which apply to turfgrass agronomy and the Authority.
Capital Improvement: Planning and implementing capital improvement projects requested and/or approved by the Chief Executive and Board of Directors.
Minimum Job Requirements:
Education: Minimum of Associates Degree in turfgrass management or related field from an accredited program or equivalent and minimum 40 hours/year of continuing education in topics related to golf course grounds maintenance.
Experience: Minimum 3 years of experience in turfgrass management or in a related area. Minimum of 2 years of supervisory experience.
Specific Skills/Abilities: Supervisory skills, computer skills, and performing the all of the duties required for the maintenance of a golf course facility. An ability to lift up to 50 pounds of equipment or materials is required.
Advanced knowledge of agronomy and turfgrass maintenance for golf courses; basic construction techniques; the characteristics and proper use of various fertilizers, amendments, herbicides, growth regulators, fungicides and insecticides; drainage and irrigation systems construction and operations. The Superintendent should also be able to operate equipment, used in the maintenance of a golf course.
Specialized Knowledge / Licenses / Etc.: Maryland Public Agency Pesticide Applicator’s license in at least categories III-C (Turf), other certifications, which may be required.
GCSAA Member preferred.
Knowledge of current federal, state and local laws and regulations affecting the management of golf course operations including but not limited to: employment, safety, and environmental standards.
