A vacancy exists in the Department of Public Works and Transportation, Bureau of Engineering and Construction.

Under general supervision, inspects the materials, methods, and workmanship, employed on construction projects to ensure compliance with approved plans and specifications.
Essential Job Duties
- Inspects the construction, repair, and rehabilitation of roads, bridges, utilities, water and sewer.
- Inspects stream and shoreline restorations and channel dredges.
- Performs field inspections of project sites.
- Observes construction work in progress.
- Ensures that the work of contractors and the materials used comply with contract plans and specifications.
- Monitors, verifies, and documents the progress of projects.
- Prepares reports of construction activities.
- Calculates and documents material quantities used on jobs.
- Ensures that payments to contractors correspond to contract terms.
- Travels between project sites located throughout the County.
- Meets with contractors, developers, representatives of other agencies, and others to resolve issues which arise during construction.
- Confers with agency management and engineers regarding project changes.
- Responds to inquiries from the public regarding projects.
- Participates in pre-construction meetings with contractors.
- Reviews and interprets project plans and contract specifications.
- May be required to work nights, holidays, and weekends as required by the project.
- Drafts as-built drawings which document the completed projects.
- Takes measurements for final inspections.
Performs other related duties as required.

- Possession of a high school diploma or an appropriate equivalent
- Six years’ experience in construction, construction inspection, or a closely related field. (Additional experience may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the required education. Additional education in engineering, construction technology, or a related field may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.)
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (Entry Level):
- Knowledge of the principles, practices, methods, and techniques of construction.
- Knowledge of construction materials, tools, and equipment. Knowledge of construction plans and specifications. Knowledge of construction standards and regulations.
- Skilled in performing construction work.
- Ability to inspect the construction, repair, and alteration of public facilities.
- Ability to ensure contractors’ compliance with plans, standards, and specifications.
- Ability to read, interpret and apply construction contracts, specifications, and plans.
- Ability to keep and maintain records.
- Ability to prepare reports.
- Ability to calculate material quantities.
- Ability to draft as-built drawings.
- Ability to coordinate assignments.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with contractors, developers, the public and others.

Physical and Environmental Conditions: The work of this classification entails field inspections of major construction sites. Work includes frequent walking, standing, and exposure to potential hazards such as traffic, heavy equipment, and adverse weather. Duties entail frequent travel between construction sites located throughout the County.Conditions of Employment: Employees in this classification may be assigned to work nights, evenings, weekends, and/or holidays. Employees are subject to call to duty in emergencies and may be required to work overtime as needed.
