Examples of Duties
Under close supervision, assists building maintenance mechanics, electricians, heating and air conditioning mechanics, painters, plumbers, and carpenters in performing repairs, construction, and maintenance as appropriate to each trade.
Examples of Essential Duties
Assists skilled tradespersons with major and minor repairs and maintenance.
Replaces light tubes and ballasts for fluorescent fixtures. Checks operation of lights, switches, or appliances. Pulls and cuts wires or cables through conduits.
Installs or replaces duct work. Replaces belts and filters. Lubricates motors and other components as directed.
Cuts materials to required length. Drills holes as directed. Drives nails and screws. Holds materials in place for tradesperson.
Mixes paint. Applies base coats of paint with brush or roller. Cleans brushes and rollers. Lays and removes drop cloths.
Demolishes walls. Removes debris.
Stocks vehicles with needed supplies and equipment. Retrieves tools, equipment, and materials for tradesperson.
Cleans heating and air conditioning equipment. Cleans work area upon completion
EXAMPLES OF OTHER DUTIES
Prepares and cleans up tools, equipment, and work areas.
Performs other related duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications
Training and Experience: One year's experience in any type of helper, apprentice, or trainee capacity for automotive, building, construction, or maintenance trades.
Roofing experience preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (Entry Level):
Knowledge of basic hand and power tools used in construction or mechanical trades.
Knowledge of basic techniques of construction or mechanical trades.
Ability to operate hand and power tools according to instructions.
Ability to follow directions.
Ability to comply with safety procedures.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (Full Performance):
Knowledge of County and departmental rules, regulations, policies, and procedures governing performance of duties.
Skill in operating hand and power tools according to instructions. Skill in following safety procedures.
Ability to perform routine duties independently.
Licenses and Certificates
Possession of a valid driver's license equivalent to a non-commercial, class C Maryland driver's license. (License may require endorsements and/or the absence of certain restrictions.)
Examination Procedure

Employees in this classification are designated as Emergency/Essential and may be required to work overtime with little or no advance notice. After hours and on weekends, employees must be available by phone in case of emergency.
Physical and Environmental Conditions: The work of this classification entails the performance of heavy physical labor including bending, stooping, climbing ladders, the lifting and carrying of very heavy objects and the operation of tools and equipment. Some work requires exposure to potentially hazardous conditions such as adverse weather, raw sewage, and electricity.
Medical Examination and Employment Background Investigation: Applicants selected for employment with Baltimore County must successfully complete a physical examination, drug screening and employment investigation, including, but not limited to criminal background, education certification and fingerprinting checks.
