Pay Schedule I, Grade 22, Regular Schedule:  35 hours per week

A vacancy exists in the Department of Public Works and Transportation, Bureau of Transportation.

Under general supervision, inspects and analyzes local traffic conditions. Conducts counts, surveys, studies, and related traffic control investigations.

Essential Job Duties
  • Inspects and analyzes local traffic conditions and data.
  • Conducts traffic counts, surveys, and studies.
  • Investigates field conditions, and determines the need for new traffic control installations, or the modification or replacement of existing installations.
  • Investigates complaints and reports of potential traffic hazards.
  • Reviews work zone traffic control. 
  • Conducts neighborhood traffic management studies.
  • Prepares reports and summarizes statistics regarding findings.
  • Prepares sketches of existing conditions and proposed traffic control changes such as channelization plans and signal and marking plans.
  • Prepares and writes traffic legislation proposals.
  • Initiates and prepares work orders.
  • Makes field inspections to ensure work was completed in accordance with prepared plans and specifications.

Possession of a high school diploma or an appropriate equivalent.
Plus
Two years' experience in traffic operations, subprofessional engineering, surveys, and/or a related field.

Additional experience may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the required education.

Additional education in one of the fields listed above may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.

  • Ability to inspect and analyze local traffic conditions
  • Ability to conduct traffic investigations, counts, and surveys
  • Ability to investigate potential traffic hazards
  • Ability to determine the need for new traffic installations and the modification or replacement of existing installations 
  • Ability to prepare traffic legislation proposals
  • Ability to prepare reports, presentations, and sketches of traffic plans
  • Ability to conduct neighborhood traffic management studies
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the public and co-workers

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (Full Performance)
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of traffic management
  • Knowledge of traffic rules, regulations, and ordinances 
  • Knowledge of traffic control procedures, devices, and installations 
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of conducting traffic investigations, counts, and surveys
  • Skill in inspecting and analyzing local traffic conditions

Licenses and Certificates
Possession of a valid driver's license equivalent to a noncommercial, class C Maryland driver's license is required at the time of appointment.

Proof of Licenses, Certifications and Education
Applicants are required to submit proof of professional licenses, certifications and education beyond high school to meet the required and preferred qualifications of the position. Diplomas or transcripts must show the applicant's major field of study. Copies and unofficial transcripts are acceptable.

EXAMINATION PROCEDURE
Applicants will be qualified based on an evaluation of their training and experience, as stated on their application, which includes answers to the supplemental questions. Applicants must state the dates and duties of past and present experience clearly and completely for evaluation purposes.Physical and Environmental Conditions
The work of this classification entails the performance of physical activities such as walking and standing. Duties may require exposure to traffic and frequent travel between work sites.

Medical Examination and Employment Background Investigation
Applicants selected for employment with Baltimore County must successfully complete a physical examination, drug screening and employment investigation, including, but not limited to criminal background, education certification and fingerprinting checks.

Salary : $41,458 - $47,865
