What are the responsibilities and job description for the Mental Performance Coach position at Baltimore Orioles?
JOB SUMMARY: The Baltimore Orioles are seeking a full time Mental Performance Coach for the 2023 Major League Baseball Championship season. This coach will be responsible for the implementation and supervision of the Baltimore Orioles mental skills program at the Orioles facilities in Sarasota, FL along with the Dominican Republic.
REPORTS TO: Head of Strength & Performance
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Primary duties to include, but not limited to the following:
- Oversee administration and implementation of the Orioles mental skills training plan to develop effective routines that lead to optimal performance for both the FCL and DSL teams
- Work in congruence with both the Mental Skills and Performance Departments’ philosophy and goals to implement education, evaluation, and coaching of mental skills with assigned teams as it relates to on field execution
- Develop and collaborate with FCL and DSL coaches and staff on player performance profiles, mental skills training plans, and overall wellness
- Work within the Orioles mental skills training plan to build mental strength and resilience with players in Florida and the Dominican Republic before they progress up the affiliate system
- Provide appropriate referrals for mental health concerns for players and staff
- Work in partnership with the Employee Assistance Program and Medical department professionals to stay up to date on MLB initiatives, latest research, and synergistic goals for the 2023 season
- Communicate well with the department head on progress of mental skills throughout the year as it relates to performance, collaboration, and themes
- Effectively operate with other mental performance coaches to contribute to culturally relevant and sensitive curriculum, initiatives, and goals within the department
- Provide in person care and collaboration with mental skills staff for rehabbing players throughout their process of return to play to create best experience for player development during this time
QUALIFICATIONS:
Required:
- Master’s degree in Sport Psychology; or equivalent degree in professional counseling; eligible for licensure in FL
- Adhere to the American Psychological Association (APA) and AASP code of ethics
- Adhere to Baltimore Orioles Organization Policies and Procedures
- Strong purpose, motivation, and work ethic to work long, flexible hours including weekend and holidays
- Act as a role model within and outside the Baltimore Orioles Organization.
- Possess CMPC, or ability to work towards certification; mentorship can be provided.
- Willingness to live in Sarasota, FL during the season, spring training and during camps
- Capability to travel to the Dominican Republic for camps and in-season
- Ability to collaborate with a medical department environment and comply with all confidentiality requirements
- Bilingual (English & Spanish)
- Desire to bring counseling skills to professional baseball setting
- Proven ability to effectively present to large groups on mental skills
