POSITION SUMMARY:
The YMCA Preschool Assistant Teacher is a creative, fun and inspirational classroom leader who is excited to belong to a high quality, values-based preschool program for children ages 1 to 5 years old. The Bangor YMCA Preschool Program that is in full compliance with state licensing regulations, is evidence-based and impactful. The assistant teacher is a great communicator with children and adults and understands that YMCA preschool is a critically important, mission-driven program that is key to helping young children succeed in life. The assistant teacher emphasizes the importance of living and teaching the YMCA’s core values of honesty, respect, caring and responsibility.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Supervises children, classroom and activities while encouraging intellectual, physical and social/emotional growth for every child in a positive and empowering way.
- Is a hands-on classroom leader with deep involvement in evidence-based curriculum development and is responsible for daily lesson planning and activities.
- Assists the Lead Teacher to complete systematic observations and evaluations of each child on a consistent basis. Maintains required program records e.g. behavioral, accident and medication records.
- Encourages program involvement by families and community members as volunteers.
- Attends and participates in family nights, program activities, staff meetings and mandatory staff trainings.
- Works with the program manager and peers to elevate the quality of the YMCA EEC program to achieve the highest standards set by state and national certifying organizations, the Maine Roads to Quality Professional Network and the YMCA.
- Is an organized multi-tasker with the ability to deal with families from all walks of life in a way that reflects YMCA values.
- Is fun, creative, inspiring, kind, calm and patient with great communication and relationship skills so children and adults feel understood and empowered. Ensures parent and family feedback is acted upon in a timely and professional manner.
- Acts as a primary responder in case of injury, accident or illness and works with staff to ensure the program meets the highest standards for safety. Completes accurate, timely incident/accident reports.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Minimum of associate degree in Child Development/Education or related field is preferred.
- Completes Maine Early Learning Guidelines Training through the Maine Roads to Quality (MRTQ) Professional Development Network within 90 days of hire date.
- Pursues MRTQ professional development to ensure YMCA career goals for lead teachers are met in a timely manner in collaboration with the Preschool Manager.
- Previous experience working with children in an early education setting preferred.
- Proficient with technology
- Ability to plan, organize and implement age-appropriate/developmentally appropriate
- program activities and lesson plans.
- Previous experience with diverse populations preferred. Ability to develop positive, authentic relationships with people from different backgrounds.
- Be able to multi-task including managing multiple deadlines and priorities and problem-solve issues as they arise. Be flexible and modify role when needed.
- Be an effective communicator – both oral and in writing – with strong presentation and interpersonal skills.
- CPR, First Aid, AED certifications and Child Abuse prevention training within 30 days of
hire date.
