UNIVERSAL BANKING SPECIALIST
Overview:
The Universal Banking Specialist position may be called on to perform various duties which include personal banker functions (including the opening of deposits, loans, and ancillary bank services), teller functions, vault/ATM functions and deposit/loan administration functions. Designated employee(s) within the Universal Banking Specialist position may provide backup assistance in one or more of the above-referenced areas as needed and potentially in other branches; may be requested to perform monthly audits, including cash audits, procedural reviews and will assist the retail banking team with special projects. A significant level of trust and diplomacy is required to be an effective subject matter expert in the position. In-depth dialogues, conversations and explanations with customers, coworkers, and outside vendors of a sensitive and/or highly confidential nature is a normal part of the day-to-day experience. Responsibilities:
Grow Core Deposits and Consumer Loans and Expand Customer Relationships:
- Make outbound calls to new and existing customers
- Follow up with walk-in customers and prospects that are referred from other sources
- Open deposit accounts and consumer loans
- Sell ancillary bank services as appropriate
- Thoroughly understand and develop proficiency in BankSouth’s digital product offerings
- Assist Relationship Managers and Business Development Officers as needed to grow relationships, including attendance at off-site appointments and after-hours events as needed
- Determine appropriate follow up schedule with customers according to needs identified
- Refer products and services beyond the normal scope of duties to other business lines
- Attend and contribute to sales and departmental meetings
- Participate in ongoing sales, product, service, operational and regulatory training
Teller Functions:
- Balance cash drawer daily to assure accuracy in transactions and notify supervisor regarding any exceptions
- Maintain drawer balance limits and sales of excess cash to the vault as needed
- Complete daily balancing and servicing of ATM’s, coin counter, etc. as assigned
- Issue/maintain logs on all official checks, money orders, gift cards, travelers’ checks, process redemption of savings bonds according to written procedures
- Adhere to all basic opening/closing procedures and dual control requirements
Transaction Management:
- Inspect and verify customer identity through thorough examination and referencing of all documents and identification; verify all endorsements
- Receive loan payments and deposits from customers, address inquiries on accounts, record amounts and dates of payments and other significant information, check customer calculations, validate checks and/or count cash payments
- Accurately count and authenticate all coin/currency received
- Accurately and correctly prepare all teller tickets, receipts for night deposits, mail deposits and other documents
- Properly sort proof work and/or onsite capture items
- Properly apply placement of deposit holds as needed
- Complete documentation for suspicious activity reports (SARS) for research and follow up
- Complete required documentation for currency transaction reports (CTR) reporting
Vault Management (as needed for coverage):
- Balance vault to assure accuracy in transactions and notify supervisor regarding any exceptions
- Maintain vault limits and sell excess cash to Federal Reserve
- Prepare outgoing shipment of cash going to Federal Reserve under dual control
- Order cash from Federal Reserve maintaining enough cash on hand to service customers’ needs
- May receive funds sold by tellers and other Universal Bankers verifying accuracy of strapped cash
- May assist tellers and other Universal Bankers with needs for cash
Compliance:
- Ensure compliance with all applicable state and federal banking laws & regulations
- Maintain confidentiality of all customer files and proprietary (physical, electronic, intellectual) Bank property
- Satisfactorily complete all required Bank Secrecy Act/Anti-Money Laundering/OFAC/other compliance training and comply with all regulations which apply within the scope of the position
- Satisfactorily perform all the required duties of the position and meet the performance standards of the position based on metrics for measurement of performance that are specified
Key Results Areas:
- Successful sales of new deposit and loan products
- Effective cross-selling of other bank services (debit cards, on-line banking, e-statements, etc.)
- Exceptional customer service and maintenance of new and existing customer relationships
- Satisfactory compliance with all internal and external operating procedures, laws, and regulations
Qualifications
Experience & Education:
High School Diploma or equivalent is required. Bachelor’s degree with relevant concentration is preferred. Prior experience as a universal banker, personal banker and/or teller would be beneficial.
Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
- Excellent customer service skills.
- Ability to communicate clearly and professionally and work as part of a team.
- Cash handling experience is a plus.
- Ability to de-escalate situations involving dissatisfied customers and offer patience and support.
- Ability to provide a memorable customer experience with each interaction.
- Ability to follow prescribed procedures and execute job duties as requested.
- Bi-lingual in English and Spanish is desired but not required.
Other Requirements:
REQUIRES CURRENT NMLS REGISTRATION
Satisfactorily complete all required compliance training and compliance with all laws and regulations that apply based on the scope of this position.

Work involves personal contact with others inside and/or outside the organization, generally regarding routine matters for purposes of giving and obtaining information, as well as advising or referring, which commonly require shorter discussions.
Physical Requirements:
Perform primarily sedentary work with limited physical exertion and occasional lifting of up to 25 lbs. Must be capable of climbing/descending stairs in an emergency. Must be able to operate routine office equipment including telephone, copier, facsimile, and calculator. Must be able to routinely perform work on a computer for an average of 6-8 hours per day, when necessary. Must be able to work extended hours whenever required or requested by management. Must be capable of regular, reliable, and timely attendance.
Working Conditions:
Must be able to routinely perform work indoors in climate-controlled shared work environment with moderate noise.
Mental and/or Emotional Requirements:
Must be able to perform job functions independently and with limited supervision. Must work effectively as part of a team. Must be able to read and carry out various written instructions and follow oral instructions. Must be able to speak clearly and deliver information in a logical and understandable sequence. Must be able to perform basic financial calculations with accuracy. Must be capable of dealing calmly and professionally with numerous different personalities from diverse cultures at various levels within and outside of the organization and demonstrate highest levels of customer service and discretion when dealing with the public. Must be able to perform responsibilities with composure under stress of deadline, requirements for extreme accuracy and quality and/or fast pace. Must be capable of exercising highest level of discretion on confidential matters.
