Job Description
The Charge Nurse has twelve-hour responsibility for the effective implementation of the philosophy, goals, policies, and procedures of the hospital and the nursing department and the effect on patient care in the department. This position s responsible for directing and overseeing the daily activities of the unit on an assigned shift and is responsible and accountable for directing and facilitating the flow of patient care activities of the department/area. This position provides care and education for the patient based on their illness, symptoms, and courses of treatment. Manages individualized, goal-directed nursing care through use of the nursing process and the principles of primary nursing in accordance with departmental and hospital policies and procedures.
Responsibilities
Assess and diagnose patient and family needs to provide quality care. Develops, discusses, and communicates a realistic plan of care for each patient, in collaboration with each patient/significant other in order to address all identified needs. Demonstrate skills and judgment necessary to implement medical plan of care, nursing interventions, and procedures as necessary for the care of the patient. Maintains up to date and accurate documentation of nursing care provided to ensure the integration of information for use by the healthcare team, to ensure quality care. Evaluates the identified problems, care provided, and patient's responses are reassessed to meet patient and family needs and assure overall quality of care delivered. Performs all responsibilities/duties required by the emergency unit/critical care division as defined in the scope of service, to assure that the unique nature of the client is addressed. This includes, but is not limited to the age of the client served. Assumes responsibility for daily personnel assignment/monitoring patient care and overall unit activities, in accordance with established standards. Maintains current knowledge/certification/licensure. Assess and diagnose patient and family needs to provide quality care. Develop, discuss and communicate plan of care. Demonstrate skills and judgment necessary to implement medical plan of care. Evaluate identified problems, care provided and patient response and take appropriate action. Maintain timely and accurate documentation and complete audits for the unit as necessary. Performs all responsibilities as defined in the department's scope of service. Participates in interdisciplinary, interdepartmental performance improvement activities. Manages patient flow through input, throughput, and output phases of an ED visit.Supports Professional Governance through engagement and support of the Unit Based Council and other nursing councils. Assumes responsibility for overall function of unit in the absence of the clinical nurse manager. Collaborates with the clinical nurse manager to provide feedback for performance evaluations.Assist in other duties as assigned to support the operational needs of the department and organization. May be required to remain on campus immediately before, during, and after severe weather and/or disasters.
