Job Description

The Director - Emergency Department assumes administrative and operational responsibility for the management of the Baptist Hospital Emergency Department. The position participates in strategic planning as it relates to the patient care division, the hospital as a whole, and the health service, and recommends space and resource allocation needed by the department/service. The position establishes objectives and current standards of perioperative nursing practice, and defines, interprets, and implements the philosophy and objectives for Emergency Services. The position is responsible for program development and administration, fiscal accountability, and efficient resource management, and facilitates and manages operational change while maintaining optimal patient, physician, and employee satisfaction. The position ensures compliance with the standards set forth by regulatory agencies including all documentation requirements. The Director - Emergency Department continually collaborates with other areas that effect the Emergency Department to provide excellent patient care, patient satisfaction and efficient patient throughput.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities:

  • Assists the executive director in development, implementation and evaluation of on going service programs that assure quality nursing and patient care programs consistent with hospital mission.
  • Monitors/maintains unit compliance with regulatory, accrediting and hospital policy for patient services, and environmental and personnel safety.
  • Works collaboratively with the Educator(s) to ensure all clinical competencies are met.
  • Develops, prioritizes, and supports a capital equipment budget in collaboration with key stakeholders.
  • Oversees quality improvement program which monitors and evaluates critical aspects of care.
  • Successfully manages operational budgets that reflects required workload, forecasted units of service, and programmatic changes. Monitors budget expenditures, as reflected in an accurate, objective variance analysis.
  • Maintains current license and knowledge of nursing care requirements for all patients on the unit. Assesses need for personal growth and development and takes the initiative in seeking opportunities to meet this need.
  • Attains all agreed to goals and objectives within specified time frames, as part of the organization's overall mission.
  • Is responsible for department's operational excellence; ensures department delivers quality services in accordance with applicable policies, procedures, and professional standards.
  • Manage team members which include orientation, development and evaluation of personnel, and monitoring the provision of delivering quality services. Participates in the recruiting, interviewing and selecting of team members following policies, guidelines and applicable laws. Evaluates their performance relative to job goals and requirements. Provides coaching to staff, recommends in-service education programs, and ensures adherence to internal policies and standards.


Qualifications

Minimum Work Experience

  • 5 years of experience and clinical competence in emergency nursing or related nursing specialty, required.
  • 1 - 3 years of supervisor/management experience, required.
  • 1 - 3 years regulatory surveys experience, required.

Education Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in nursing, required.
  • Master's degree in nursing, business, or healthcare, preferred.

Licenses and Certifications

  • Registered Nurse Licensed State of Florida or eligible compact state, required upon hire.
  • BLS for Healthcare Providers (BLS) through American Heart Association, required upon hire.
  • ACLS Provider (ACLS) through American Heart Association, required upon hire.
  • National Institutes Of Health Stroke Scale (NIH), required upon hire.
  • PALS Provider (PALS) through American Heart Association, required within 90 days of hire.
  • Non-violent crisis intervention (CPI), required within 90 days of hire.
  • Trauma Nurse Core Curriculum (TNCC), required within 1 year of hire.
  • Professional Nursing Certification, required within 2 years of hire.
