The retail pharmacy assures that the primary responsibility of the pharmacy department is carried out; that is, to see that the correct medication is dispensed to the correct customer by the correct mode of administration at the appropriate time. These tasks take a combination of individual participation and first line supervision of technician staff. In addition, the pharmacist serves as a medication information resource for all customers, including patients, medical staff, and hospital staff. Participates in pharmacy programs in accordance with currently established health care standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Interprets, evaluates the appropriateness of, and dispenses medications as indicated by a practitioner’s order. Must be proficient in determining age-specific differences (from neonates to geriatric patients) when evaluating the order
- Labels medications for patient use in accordance with applicable state and federal law
- Dispenses controlled substances and completes/maintains required records of dispensing as per appropriate policies.
- Verifies prescription and/or medication order contents are consistent with computerized medication profile
- Clarifies and documents prescribing inconsistencies (interventions) with the prescribing practitioner as appropriate.
- Counsels patients and/or family regarding appropriate use of medications as requested, which may include appropriate REM education in regard to specialty pharmacy medication.
- Provides clinical consultation and clarification to practitioners. Communicates effectively and suggests appropriate, cost-effective therapeutic alternatives to medical staff, as needed
- Contributes to the quality and effective operation of the department. Supervises and directs pharmacy support personnel. Verifies the daily activities of pharmacy technicians. Participates in the performance appraisal of pharmacy support personnel as requested.
- Works independently with minimal supervision. Organizes and prioritizes work assignments. Ensures pharmacy services are provided in a timely manner
- Answers the telephone, identifying self and department. Directs calls to appropriate personnel. Answers customer requests
- Participates in the quality improvement and medication use review activities of the department. Collects data; conducts quality monitors and inspections; maintains logs, records, and other documentation as assigned including adverse drug reaction and medication error reporting.
- Provides accurate, adequate, and timely drug information to the professional staff
- Provides drug information to patients and their families, as requested
- Documents all clinical activities and interventions accurately and completely
- May be required to work with hazardous pharmaceuticals, and disposing of waste medication in containers located in pharmacy.
- Maintains competence required for current job title/position. Maintains current pharmacist licensure. Maintains CE hours as required by law and for job title/position
