JOB SUMMARY:
Perform repetitive duties such as receiving, sorting, assembling and routing material to the processing area. Review documentation and stage material based on factors such as destination within the shop. Load and unload material to be moved. Perform a combination of labor support duties such as: load, unload, move, or stack material by hand; lift, move, stack and unstack pallets; secure material placed on pallets to prevent unnecessary movement; maintain a clean, orderly, and safe work area. Incumbent is required to operate an electric, diesel, or gasoline powered forklift to perform the duties of a Material Handler. Make daily operational check on forklift. Skill in handling controls for starting, stopping, backing, and driving forklift through narrow aisles in building and up and down ramps. Must be able to drive the forklift and its load adjust to how high and wide the area to place loads, and determine whether the forklift is able to lift the load and whether the load is properly balanced. KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED OF THE POSITION:
1. Knowledge of general warehousing procedures.
2. Ability to organize and select material.
3. Skill in operating a forklift.
4. Ability to follow instructions.
5. Ability to do the work of the position without more than normal supervision.
6. Ability to work safely and follow safety procedures when lifting heavy objects.
SUPERVISOR CONTROLS:
The supervisor defines the objectives and priorities, informs the incumbent of special priorities and deadlines, and the degree of quality and accuracy that is expected. The supervisor provides additional instructions for new, difficult, or unusual tasks that may include suggested work methods or advice. The incumbent independently carries out regular and recurring assignments without assistance. However, the supervisor is available for advice on any deviations, problems, or unusual instructions. Completed work, reports, and procedures are reviewed for technical accuracy and compliance with instructions.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Work is performed inside or outside and is exposed to all types of weather conditions. Areas may be damp, noisy, dirty, dusty, hot, cold, or drafty. The work site is well lighted, well ventilated, and easily accessible.
PHYSICAL EFFORT:
Required standing on hard surfaces for extended periods of time, bend, stoop, and work in tiring and sometimes uncomfortable positions. Consistently lift and carry items that weigh up to 50 lbs. move, maneuver, push, or slide items for proper position. Heavier items are moved with the assistance from other workers.
SAFETY AND HEALTH REQUIREMENTS:
Employee is required to wear safety equipment such as ear plus, eye glasses and any other safety equipment appropriate for the job and work assigned, as directed by the Supervisor.
