Barker Central School District is seeking a dynamic and unique ENL Teacher who is student-centered and desires to be part of a collaborative team that continuously strives to improve the students' ability to learn, grow and develop.

Qualifications: New York State Certification: Any applicable certification for teaching students
English as a second language (ESOL, ELL, etc.)

Spanish speaking preferred.

Must have knowledge of the NYS standards.

Salary: Per Diem Rate

Overview: Responsible for teaching ENL students with proven results in student learning. The Teacher will plan, prepare, and teach well developed culturally responsive lessons which enthuse and inspire students, and promote an exciting rigorous learning environment. The Teacher will provide student services to those students enrolled, ensuring the effective completion of the curriculum that they are responsible for. This person will develop creative forms of instruction to meet the needs of a diverse rural student population, while establishing and enforcing non-instructional duties throughout the educational process. The teacher will work within a diverse environment of dynamic learners. The position will require a high degree of creativity, cultural awareness and problem-solving capabilities.

GOAL: To be committed to helping students achieve commencement level education with a primary emphasis on learning experiences which address the NYS Common Core and applicable curriculum.


Foundation/Qualities:

  • A broad knowledge of general education curriculum and a solid foundation in student development
  • Thorough understanding and up to date knowledge of laws, regulations, and ENL standards
  • Knowledge of current ENL topics and methodologies
  • Effectively and appropriately differentiate instruction to meet all students' learning styles with an appreciation for students' cultural and learning differences
  • Select and sequence culturally relevant materials, resources, and approaches according to the content area and audience of diverse learners
  • Design, administer, and evaluate a range of authentic formative and summative assessments as appropriate
  • Induct students using culturally responsive practices to provide academic advice, counselling, educational guidance, and advisory support, including individual learning plans, as directed
  • Develop culturally relevant materials and resources, implement, support and/or lead in the production and improvement of curriculum planning, and undertake other academic project work as directed
  • Utilize learning spaces and tools (i.e., notice boards, displays) to share student work and lived experiences.

  • Training in behavioral analysis and modification and experience working with children with all different levels of disabilities

Responsibilities/Duties:

  • Foster an atmosphere that encourages student to learn and appreciate their language abilities.
  • Willingness to expand and develop both knowledge and subject matter to improve student learning.
  • Comprehensive understanding of Common Core Learning Standards and NY state assessments.
  • Assess student's skills, learning needs/requirements and set goals for effective instruction plans and ability to modify curriculum as needed on basic subjects using evidence-based techniques such as multisensory learning, repetition or phonetics for students of diverse backgrounds, interests, and learning needs in an inclusive settings.
  • Facilitate Content Courses (STEM or Humanities with a specialization in a core domain Science, Math, ELA, or Social Studies).
  • Introduce STEAM-related topics.
  • Establish clear expectations and objectives for all lessons, units, and projects, and communicate those to students.
  • Ability to use different technologies and programs effectively to ensure the ability to integrate suitable use of such.
  • Select reading and other curriculum-development materials, including textbooks, in accordance with local and state guidelines.
  • Prepare students for standardized tests, working within the parameters of state and local requirements, and provide diagnostic feedback.
  • Ability to manage classrooms and implement school procedures with diverse students and different learning abilities.
  • Meet one-on-one with students to improve performance and address behavioral issues.
  • Model acceptable social behaviors.
  • Incorporate new models of the inclusive classroom.
  • Ability to utilize positive reinforcement and behavior modification and instruction techniques to develop positive changes in your students' academic and social development.
  • Adapt learning materials to students' needs, look for engaging activities and resources that can be easily modified to each child's educational requirements. (similar to Responsibility bullet #3 above)
  • Communicate, collaborate, and help coordinate with teachers, administration, school counselors, occupational therapists, psychologists, speech therapists, parents and other staff/resources matters that might impede students' progress in order to provide a more effective learning environment for students, especially special need students, to improve their potential and development, including but not limited to implementation of intervention plans and Individualized Educational Plans (IEPs).
  • Ability to develop strong communications with students, staff, parents, and community.
  • Prepare students for transition to the next grade.
  • Consults with parents/guardians:
    • Acts as a resource for information with regard to student's progress, potential problems, and/or transition to the next grade.
    • Facilitate conferences with them.
    • Is available for phone calls.
  • Works with administration to report child abuse and follows up as needed.
  • Ability to take precautions to protect students, equipment, materials and facilities, and keep accurate records in compliance with relevant laws, policies and regulations.
  • Plan and supervise class projects, field trips, visits by guest speakers or other experiential activities, and guide students in learning from those activities.
  • Organize and label materials, and display students' work.
  • Participates as a member in student-related, school-based committees and staff meetings
  • Continuous professional development.
  • Flexibility in completing daily tasks.
  • Experience in the use of technology, communications, and information systems to support student learning.
  • Performs other duties as directed by the Superintendent or designee.
